Well lets see what the perks are and what exactly is the nature of the service as well as the "equipment" which will be used. And it if it is up to standard then yes maybe.....however remember i have stood against the Darkflames for a good year now....i won't be that easily swayed.

@Fas - if we offered you any kind of temptation you would not be an unconditional slave to the DF. The terms and conditions of employment are non-negotiable.... ;)

See you soon BS :)

Hello Dottus, the conference was great, but in another way than I expected. There was much more focus on multidisciplinary issues that I thought, and best of all - I got to meet and discuss with many people from fields I would never normally come in contact with professionaly, such as sociology, linguistics, and antropology. :)

I also met the guy who is chairman of the Swedish sceptic organisation, aiming to investigate and debunk pseudoscience. Psuedoscience, as opposed to simply not being science, is something not fulfilling the criteria for science but claming to do so and presenting itself as doing so.

@Dottie: Of couse I have an url:
http://www.physto.se/~vetfolk/index.html

It's in Swedish, so it's not very interesting to the other posters here, I'm afraid. They are however interested in having me on their scientific board, something I'm considering at the moment.

They work both with educational issues such as communicating science to normal media and laymen, evaluating Swedish university courses and investigating and critising conclusions drawn from different popular psedosciences.

@Gwally: :rolleyes: Yes, exactly. It's so obvious...

@Sleep: Unfortunately this organisation only provides debunking of claims related to science, not to politics - they would need a few thousand full time working members to address the problem you aim at :D :rolleyes:

@CE: Thanks.

What issues should you be working with in that case?

@Sleep: Maybe you're on to something there: You've heard of Theocracies, Monocracies, Democracies, etc., maybe what we really need is a Scientocracy! Let the scientists rule! Now, THAT would be fun! :D

@Dot: I'd be consulted in issues regarding neuroscience and psychology. Many times psedoscientific claims are skillful and clever, so you have to be an expert yourself to see what's wrong with the claims. An example we discussed was the claim from a Swedish psychologist that has written a book in defence of psychoanalytical theory and methods. She claims, among other things, that this type of therapy has proven efficient in the US. However, you have to be a shrink yourself to know that the US psychoanalytic tradition is totally different to the Scandinavian, so the two can't be compared and thus the claim is unfounded. In her book, this woman claims that politicans, the drug industry, natural scientists etc are in a conspiracy against psychoanalysts and that the scientific claim that psychoanalysis has so far, after 100 years, not been able to demonstrate one single case where a patients has been cured from a psychiatric disorder, is a lie. To prove it's a lie, she refers to several US studies, and the studies are all published in good scientific journals and have a flawless design - however, the problem is that the therapy forms used in the US would be classified as Cognitive therapy in Sweden, a totally different type of therapy that has been demonstrated to improve psychiatric conditions.

Another issue we discussed my potential participation in, would be the erranous and simplified way media presents the genetics-biology-environment issue. Most researches in my field view biology as the field where genetics and environmental factors are in constant interplay. Media however, spreads the outdated and incorrect idea that genetics and biology are the same, and that interaction is mainly one-way, ie from genes and biology to environment. And sometimes they even turn they causality around. Example: In patients with chronic stress depression, brain serotonin levels are markedly decreased compared to healthy people. Media writes: Stress depression is caused by lack of serotonin in brain.

EDIT: @Gwally: So it's you and Plato, is it? :D
