If only the makers had given post-test Anomen some different selection dialogs...but anyway. His romance conversations are truly quite nice. It might not give an RL guy warm fuzzies but I have really liked them. :) In my opinion that makes up for other areas. And yes, I found him to be quite a capable fighter and cleric. Admittedly I've only tried Viconia once and to me she was very annoying-much more than Anomen. Given the choice, I'll take my troubled, ****y and (for me) much more appealing Anomen.

I'd say the female PCs were slighted in options only. We have only one choice who is basically good aligned (officially speaking). But for that choice, if you're playing a mostly good character and you really give Anomen a chance, he's worth it, to me.

Gotta agree with Odami on this one: his Romance is definetly on top of it all. Unlike Aerie, who, is just overall dull in her relationship (Again, IN MY OPINION!) you get to actually take part in Anomen's life. Like when you chase him down after somebody dies and how you make some of the most crucial decisions for him. So what if he seems like he's got two personalities? You gotta love a man that compares you to a crimson rhodelia that he has just picked in the middle of a dungeon (Or in my case, Fikraags Lair. ;) )

I think I'm gona downlaod the Kelsey NPC now as I have been told that if you play a female protaganist with both of them in your party certain...problems will erupt in a relationship. :D I'll have to check that one out!

END...Spoiler?

Yes, Anomen is soooooo much more appealing to me than that Drow preistess. To be honest with you, I hate Viconia with a passion. Ever since I had to kill that guard in BG1 to save her hide and all she could do was be rude to me in return I just have absolutely despised her. Okay, I'm over it now. I mis BG2 so much I think I'm gonna uninstall my Icewind Dale game and start over with SoA (With a single-and-looking, female, PC, or cource!) But that first dungeon is SO boring...

I agree on Aerie, her incessant "I've lost my wings sob sob" dialogues get on my nerves. However Viconia, once you get a little bit into the romance, shows herself to have had a rough time of things since she got kicked out of the Underdark, it's hardly surprising she's wary of letting people close after all that's happened to her :( .
Anomen still annoyed me with his "I killed 5 bazillion ogres with a rusty nail once, aren't I so good?" dialogues. How can one man be so full of BS?
Let me know what Kelsey's like, I try to experience everything in the game to get a better overall knowledge of BG2.

Ah, but Anomen has also had a hard time. Perhaps nothing like Viconia, but then he's not Drow and adept at pain. :p

Kelsey is FUN! Do give him a try.

Anomen, Aerie and Viconia have all had very bad childhoods, with Aerie bearing the physical marks of her internal disfiguring. Personally, I'd rather have NPCs like those in my party, with a semblance of real personalities, than a bunch of happy-go-lucky idiots who resemble Beaver clones. ;)
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

Errata...Jaheira's age, etc.

If I recall clearly, in the Forgotten Realms universe - and basically in all of TSR's gaming worlds - half-elves are supposed to be able to live to be around 450 years old or so (dwarves, by comparison, run a close second at 400). I wish I could remember exactly where I witnessed this in the dialogue, but a reference was made by Jaheira of her being involved in some sort of royal upheaval in Tethyr. I also recall reading one of the zillion history books you find in bookshelves in the various dungeons of the game that referred to the destruction of the royal house of Tethyr, and dated it as being around 150 years ago, from the current game time. If the connection is made here - and I make it, because of Jaheira's various references to Imoen as "child," and her own reference to a similar event - then Jaheira should be at least 150 years old.

As to Jaheira's quick rebound - well, it certainly isn't quick. ;) The romance takes the longest to play out, and she doesn't begin like 'ol Viccy - brazen and transparent. Rather, I have the impression that she begins to feel that she can confide in your PC, then moves on to developing feelings. At that point, she is obviously troubled and remains silent for periods of time as she considers things. She then begins to feel that Khalid is pleased with her "moving on" with you, and so begins to warm up. Doesn't sound so bad to me. :)

@Ode:

Concerning Viconia, it's obvious her life among the drow has scarred her deeply, which causes her to react in the manner she does. I've played the romance with her up to the point where she begins to actually apologize for the things she says, realizing that things are different on the surface. One can either simply react to the things she says - which I definitely consider pretty base - or see what's really going on with her. Mercy and forgiveness in drow society is lethal to the one giving it. No wonder she has a hard time with those concepts - she's never experienced them before!

I counter-act Anomen's bragging by inviting Jan Jansen to join the party. Makes for fun dialogue, like "Ano the dung orc." He sure has neat things to say to Anomen. :D

Turnip reflex, you know.

Gee, I kinda like it when you're stressed out in Spellhold, considering what to do next, when suddenly out of the clear blue sky, Jan belches. Marvelous! :D

Jan goes great with anyone, try him with Minsc for the hilarious Boo dialogues, or with Viconia for the Plooty Paladin-Piper's flesh-golem eating contest story.

Didn't someone have a homepage with all the compiled Jan Jansen stories?

Undead Ability

Wow .. even just random browsing thru threads is revealing such a lot .. it's making me itch to go back and start playing.
I don't if anyone else got through the game without once using Turn Undead Ability ....

When I first started playing the game I came across this ... and could no head or tail of when and how to use this ... and then since I became proficient in many other weapon and skill uses I completely forgot about this innate ability and so never ended up using it.

BOY!! Now I realize that I could have used it to full effect in my Bodhi Lair encounters (esp because by then Anomen was some level 16 or 17 I think!!).

The first time I met Vampires was in the Winspear Lair .. IT WAS soooooo difficult for me to handle them .. and I just read that it's very easy if you use Turn Undead.

Verrrry exciting .. I don't what else stuff I have missed out on using.

"What is it?"

Hi Odami ...
How did you change that irritating dialogue of Anomen's into something more pleasant?

That really irks me and blows up any romance I might feel ..

It's a fun thing. When I played with Anomen my character was a cleric too. There's nothing like watching a room full of those nasty undead go boom. :D

dolonjha: I kind of cheated I guess. I read around and learned about this Near Infinity thing. I opened up my saved game in this program and saw where certain dialogs were assigned to actions. I also saw that each response had a number. I then simply changed the selection number that has the "What is it?" associated and changed the number value to something else. I chose one of his rare responses to replace it with. I don't think I messed anything up. ;) I really think post test and certainly Sir Anomen should have had a different sound set for things like that. But oh well...

Oh, man. When you send that guy into a room of Vampires and Skeletons and they just randomly blow up one-by-one, it gives you this feeling on invinsability...

@ any one who's listening

I love those Jan and Anomen dialoques! They are just so hillarious! Like when you're doing the Cult of the Unseeing Eye... Almost. Died. Laughing. I swear it! (You kind of need Aerie for that one to, I guess...) I'm suprised the makers just didn't make Anomen attack Jan at any point. It sounds like something he would do, doesn't it?

By the way, I have been experimenting with Kelsey and it's gotten pretty good. I really don't care for his freakish mini-quest thing, but I like the insults he and Anomen through at eachother constantly! And now Anomen looks pretty ticked, so I'm going to go play that part and see what happens...

END

On another note (And I don't mean to insult Kelsey) does anyone find his portrait slightly...Distracting? I mean, I boot up the game and my eyes go directly to his bright colored portrait. I used Shadow Keeper to switch his picture around with Garrick's from BG1 to tone it down a bit. Fitting and still looks good.

I know what you mean....actually Kelsey's portrait and personality kind of remind me of Ritchie Cunningham, from
Happy Days , he is the nice, friendly guy next door .... :)

IIRC there was a big debate a while ago on whether Kelsey was gay or not, inspired by that portrait.
Judging by Aqua-chan and DW, apparently not. :D
