Vampire! Who's become one?
Vampire! Who's become one?
Right, my character in my second run through has completed all the thieves guild, morag tong and house hlalu quests, so now he's ready to go vampire. I've made a couple of custom spells and enchanted items that should bring my resistance to common disease down to -300% to make catching vampirism easier, I've got a pair of constant effect healing rings so I should be safe walking around in daylight after becoming a vampire.
Thing is, I dunno which clan to pick. I'm interested in two things... what the individual clan quests are like, and what the special bonuses of each clan are. Since I plan to finish the game as a vampire (backpath, completely totally ignore the main quest, never even meet Cauis Cosades in Balmora, go straight to Vivec and kill him for wraithguard, then tackle Dagoth Ur), my options for things to do with this character will be a bit limited after becoming a vamp so I want to maximize my clan-related fun.
So...anyone who's done it, talk about the clan you became a part of: Aundae, Quarra or Berle.

Well, I got impatient so I went ahead and joined Quarra
Okay, first the bonuses, note that this can take you over 100 in stat or skill with no problem:
+40 to strength
+20 willpower
+20 speed
+30 sneak
+30 destruction
+30 illusion
+30 athletics
+30 acrobatics
+50 hand-to-hand
+30 unarmored
+30 mysticism
+20 blunt weapon
+20 heavy armor
According to the clan leader, the Quarra are more focused on combat then the other clans, so I assume that's reflected in the clan bonuses.
One negative about these bonuses, they do not count towards leveling if they raise any of your major/minor skills. So it's very likely you'll be shortchanging yourself a few levels, but after about level 25 that ceases to really matter.
Sun damage is 5 points/second, so you'll need 5 pts of constant effect restore health enchanted items if you plan to wander around in daylight.
You get a 50% vulnerability to fire, but 100% resistance to disease and paralysis.
Mages guild and telvanni will still talk to you, but no one else (that I've found) will. Neither the mages nor telvanni will offer you any services, though. Fast travel of any kind (ship, stilt strider, guild teleport) ceases to be an option as no one will provide it to a vampire.
Vampire clan hall does have some rudimentary shops, including a smith who does repairs.
Quarra quests seem rather basic. First one was to kill a rogue Berne vampire. Second was an ingredient hunt with a shopping list a mile long. Bit tricky since you can't fast travel and no one will sell to you. Third one is basically "go kill some other vampires". No specifics. Doesn't say where, what kind, or how many.
Quite a few vampires in the hall to speak to, but conversation options are very limited. And they hate me, anyways
"Stop wasting my time, you accident."
And oh yeah, a khajit vampire gets fangs like a saber toothed tiger

hehe...cool
In general, do you know what skills the other clans may focus on ?
Can you eventually interact with the normal Morrowind populace at all ?
As far as you know, is there a cure for vampirism ?
Sorry for the questions, but you're the first person I know to actually be turned without using a mod

Best guess, Berne is thiefly and Aundae is mage oriented. I've wiped out the Berne clan earlier for a telvanni quest and I got the 'thief' impression from them at the time, but that's all it was, an impression, so it could be wrong.
As far as I know, as a vampire you're pretty much stuck unable to deal with the normal world. There are a couple of vampire quests available in the normal world.... a redoran noble who wants to become one and you get to convince him otherwise, a couple of assasination missions for the mages guild, probably others. But otherwise, people won't have anything to do with you. Calm humanoid and charm will keep them from attacking, but won't open up their usual conversation paths.
Yes, there is a cure. If you wipe out the Berne clan west of ulviriths grave (itself west of tel fyr) you can find the papers hidden near the top of the observatory that detail the first steps of it.

Thanks for the guesstimate, CJ
I doubt I'll get fanged with this character (at least until I'm done with the main quest and guilds), but it's nice to know that I can still play through the infection and cure if I need a sidequest later to keep my interest.
Oh yeah...Those are some big teeth, Grandma

Sorry to have to tell you, it's almost impossible to become a vampire if you've gone very far in the main quest. Once you get cured of corpus, you're pretty much immune to disease. Folks have tried to lower their resistance magically, but it doesn't seem to work. Probably a script related to the corpus cure, you just can't seem to catch diseases no matter how much you lower your resistance.
I've -heard- that with a very high alchemy, you can eat vampire dust (gotten off of dead vampires) and have a chance of being infected, but I'm not sure I believe it. It's the fourth effect listed on the dust, and I'm not sure you can be effected by anything but the first when you eat an ingrediant.

I have to admit, after playing around more with a vampire, I'm starting to get unhappy with it.
For one thing, the quarra third quest I mentioned, go out and kill some vampires? Well, the magic number is 12. Once that's done, you return and you're now given the right to feed off the cattle (slaves) in the clan hall.
And that's it. No further reward. No other quests related to the clan.
I'm insanely powerful, I'm almost bored enough to go to Ald'ruhn, for example, and kill everyone there for the hell of it. But beyond mindless mayhem, there just isn't much to -do-. Kill Dagoth Ur, yes. Go find some lost artifacts, yes. But that's it. Anything that would require talking to almost anyone in the game is now beyond me.
Someone needs to make a mod to allow vamps to interact with regular people (maybe with a huge disposition drop or something), or I think being a vampire is just too limiting.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the vampire was added to give players a super-character who could kill anything. Then, they deliberately made it useless--so it's nearly impossible to finish the main line quests, or do much else in the game.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

This site has a mod that -supposedly- allows vamps to function somewhat as normal characters. Dunno...haven't tried it, but since you're already a vampire it may be what you're looking for. The name of the mod is (appropriately) "VampireMod".

Thanks S_S, I'll have to check it out.
Fable, the main quest with a vamp is actually ridiculously easy, since you get to completely bypass all but the last 5% of it No nerevarine stuff, no hortator stuff, no corpus stuff, nada. I don't want to give details as it would be a massive spoil for folks still playing the main quest, but the short version is: kill Vivec, move on to endgame from there.

It's simple, really -- believe it or not, you don't have to do -any- of the quests. Any character can do this, too, btw, not just a vamp.
Completely ignore the main quest and do whatever else you feel like doing. When you're ready for the endgame, you head to Vivec and sneak into the palace. You can pick the lock, or kill Saryoni for his key. Once inside, kill Vivec. Take wraithguard and all the papers. You won't know how to use wraithguard, so you'll have a little subquest. You take it to Yagrum the last dwarf in tel fyr, who sends you to get some books out of the ash vampire citadels behind the ghostfence. Bring him the books, and he jury rigs wraithguard. First time you use it, it does something like 200 points of damage to you. After that, it's normal. Go get keening and sunder, go kill dagoth ur.
And that's it. Completely ignores the Nerevarine and hortator stuff.
After having done the main quest the way it was intended to once, I don't think I'll do it again. Too much of it is a pain in the neck

Innnnteresting. Thanks. I think I'll stick to the old-fashioned way. It may be longer, but I'll feel like I've achieved something at the end.

Okay, the mod S_S linked to above doesn't seem to work very well, or at all, so far as I can tell. However, I found one that does. The Great Game, which can be downloaded from:
http://www.dragonsight.com/morrowind/html/mods.html
It added substantial new text to the vampires in the clan hall, -seems- to have added new quests, and allows interaction with non-vampire NPCs. Sort of. It seems to be somehow based on your reputation and that NPC's disposition. I can get most to talk to me, but some still want to attack on sight. Services are available, but withheld unless the NPC really has a high disposition. Some spells seem to have been changed. My charm spells have been replaced with 'Charm Mortal' spells, which are -very- expensive to cast.
On the whole though, this is exactly what I was looking for.

Made the discovery that in order for the Nox mod to work as intended, it needs to be installed before becoming a vampire. So I went through the entire 'get-disease-become-a-vampire' bit again, but this time I picked the Berne clan.
Bonuses to this group:
+20 strength
+20 willpower
+20 agility
+20 speed
+50 sneak
+30 athletics
+30 acrobatics
+50 hand-to-hand
+50 unarmored
+30 mysticism
+30 destruction
+30 illusion
Naturally, my first quest as a Berne is to steal something from the Quarra. No big deal, I said -- after all, now I can use fast travel! So I almsivi intervention back to balmora, go to the mages guild, teleport to ald'ruhn, where I go to catch a stilt strider to khuul.
Fast travel in daylight is automatically fatal. Oops. Except for the mage teleports, of course. I'll have to take another character and figure out exactly how many hours each form of fast travel to each place takes, otherwise I'm sure I'll be repeating the experience.

Well, I decided I'd have enough and went and did the cure vampirism quest. Even with Nox's mod, the inconveniences really stacked up. Fast travel was still a major headache and it was a real pain to have to quicksave before every conversation in case whoever I talked to wanted to attack. I've decided that the only thing I -really- like about playing a vampire is the character graphics. Hopefully some enterprising modder will create a 'vampire-graphics-only' mod.
The quest itself I won't go into, except to say it's not hard to find and not very involved. I'll have to get used to me old 'face' again, but otherwise it's not a very traumatic experience

Looks like my prayers have been answered. A modder by name of Dark Rebis was kind enough to put together a vampire-graphics-only mod for me. I just received it in email and won't be able to test it out til I'm home this evening, but if anyone else wants it forwarded to them just ask. It's only 600 bytes.
Odd... I have "'Charm Mortal" spells in my list... Wonder if this means something...
I ran into vamprism on accident while exploring an ancestal tomb behind the ghostgate. (was flying around and noticed it right against the GG wall). I saw a guy laying on the ground in the back room, looking like he was hurt. I thought peraps I had to heal him in some way, but had no heal on touch/target spells/scrolls. I tried pickpocketing him, to no avail. He was wearing a full suit of ebony armor, which I was keen on having a few pieces of to enchant. Killed him in a couple whacks, and contracted the disease. I reloaded to right before getting vampirism, and didn't notice the window come up this time. I tried over and over to get the disease on purpsose after that, and couldn't... it must be my woodelf's 75% resist disease. However... Now when I'm resting I'll see a red flash around the edges of my screen every now and then when training/resting. Is this related perhaps?
Any way to KNOW you're infected with corpus/vampirism/etc...?
