What I miss in Morrowind
I thought I would start a thread to see if anyone here played Daggerfall and what you might have expected to see in Morrowind, but didn't:
The Vampire-thing is cool, but I really miss some of the 'traditional' mobs we had in Daggerfall...like the were-creatures. As buggy as it was before patching (being turned into a wereboar even if a werewolf bit you), I liked lycanthopy. I kinda miss that in Morrowind and wish that would have been one of the things carried on.
On a side note, I also liked the red daedric armor. IMO, only the ebony armor should have that obsidian look

I must say this game is great BUT :
-Interactions with npc are too basics:a mix between morrowind (topics idea) and arcanum (deep content) would have been nice
-Quests : nearly always the same, get an object, kill someone..or talk to him (main quest is better, but guild/house quest are very similar..)
-the journal is not well made..should be divided in different sections like in arcanum (rumors,quests,ect..)
-u dont get experience when u resolve a quest.(at least u should win some special point or something..)
-some skills are very hard to raise naturally (sneak..)
-When u reach the highest level in a guild it s so ****ing frustrating , cose u don t get the great reward that u expected
i mean..this is disappointing should at least a great stuff to win after all these boring quests (go in middle of nowhere, kill a guy and/or take an item, come back and that s all for imperial legion and fighter guild at least..)
-to be able to have a manor is very good, but the fact that u can t choose its name, location, how it look ect sux..i mean there is not even some box to put ur stuff..(exept if u use editor)
-vampire : limit u too much..it s fun for a while then u notice the quest arent many and arent great at all, and u can t speak to most of the ppl :|
i miss too lycantrophy ect..
-being able to ride a horse or a gar would be cool and useful..
- u can t see health/state of ennemies
-a bar with the power of ur hit should appear..so u know exactly when u hit with full power or not.
-u can t mark a point on ur map..get very boring when u forgot where the shrines, cavern or whatever u want to go)
in conclusion, i get the feeling that Dagger fall had quite a lot more features..i guess the makers of morrowind limited a bit to avoid the huge number of bug like they had in dagger fall ..
happily they gave a great editor, so soon a lot of nice mods will come out
i really hope they work on a big patch
i might not look like it, but i really like this game..it s s amazing but so frustrating too

Couple of points...
Sneak is actually very easy to raise. Go stand near someone and sneak. Check to see if you can be successful at it (you'll need at least -some- sneak skill) and that you're in a position where it will increase (check the progress bar on the skill).
Then get a paperweight, weigh down the control key, and read a book for a few hours.
Second, some guilds actually do have nice rewards for climbing to the top: Mages, Tribune Temple, Morag Tong. Legion, Thieves and Imperial Temple (I think) offer some rewards as well, though not as good as the others.

I have trouble agreeing with this one. Quests are extremely varied, and often have multiple solutions. In fact, you may find that the item or information you acquire in a quest is sought after by several quest givers, too!

What I most wish, I suppose, are:
Day/night businesses, and activity cycles for people.
Activities of some sort once you become master of a guild.

well
surely the quest varies depending on the guild u are
but not much..i found arcanum or fallout more varied
i did all the quest for redoran, imperial legion and fighter guild and i found it very repetitive : always kill a guy, or save one, or get an item..
but in the end it's very often, find a cavern/place or whatever
clean the place, or sometimes u can get the item peacefully
i did most of mage guild and thieve guild aswell but not all..
it s fun, but after 5,6 missions wheere they send u at the opposite of the map , it get repetitive..seems like the other quest but changed a bit : the place, item, ppl to find/kill
mebbe morag tong is a bit different, as u must kill some ppl but not always in the usual way (like poison it s fun)
it s still a great game, i like the liberty u got,u can do whatever u want ,being a mad psychopath or mr hero
playing brutal, or more subtile.. ect
anyway i should learn how to edit my manor to add some useful things in it

I agree...having to sneak into shops at night was a real hoot. I spent a lot of my Daggerfall downtime (ie. non-combat) looting the shelves, trying on clothes and reading the books

Ah, I can understand why you feel that way, looking at the guilds you've done. Those three -are- the most repetitive of the bunch. By comparison, the others offer more variety. Well, mostly -- the tribunal temple is almost entirely pilgrimages.
House telvanni will switch you between gathering ingrediants, hunting for high-powered artifacts and knocking on someone's door to ask him a couple of questions. The thieves guild has, primarily, thieving quests -- but throws in some blackmail, some assassination and, for a change, a series of "good deeds". The morag tong start off as straight assasination, but move into intrigue and a full blown guild war, coupled with a sprawling, massive artifact hunt. The Imperial temple has a number of combat missions... but also a number of fund raising missions that rely solely on your speechcraft skill. Etc etc. Basically, the non-fighting guilds are more varied and interesting.

I noticed something else missing from Morrowind that I took for granted in Daggerfall...
The feeling of autonomy I felt I had in Daggerfall as I progressed in the game, regardless if I was working on the main quest path or not. Although there is a lot to do in Morrowind, I still feel somehow "constrained" within the gameworld.
Like I said, it's just a feeling I have, but even though I love Morrowind, Daggerfall (warts and all) is still my favorite ES because I never felt I had to attempt the main quest at all...it was almost enough to simply 'exist' in the Daggerfall universe. I just don't feel the same way in Morrowind (as I'm sure the Devs intended) and, frankly, I really miss that.
Hopefully, we will see some of the random elements from both Arena and Daggerfall in future installments (ie. fun, but "filler" random quests and dungeons), while retaining Morrowind's obvious improvements, aside from the obvious technical advances, over some aspects of the older games (better NPC interactions and more focused goals).

On the showoff side of things, it was also cool to be able to dress your female character totally naked (no leather strap bra for censoring!!)..I know it's not a big issue..but it was a cool showoff for friends. And the horse..miss the horse. Not having to walk everywhere and get fatigued..not to mention the Cart!!!
On the nudity thing, I suppose they couldn't do that this time coz the graphics are 100 times sharper and they'd look like pinup girls or something
Heck, Giants had a nude female LEAD character even. (Delphi) *pouting*

The sheer mind-numbing generic-ness of Daggerfall, though, was a terrible drag on gameplay. Didn't like the quest given you by your local guildmaster? No problem! Just reload, approach him again, and another one of the six or seven "type" quests would pop up again! It was an incredbily repetitive game. The generic elements in Morrowind draw attention because they stand out against so much else that's good and unique, IMO.

Absolutely right there Fable. Although I never managed to get further than finding the crazy grandma for the princess in the main plot in Daggerfall. Always got completely lost in the dungeon she was supposed to be in. Anyways. My prayers have been answered it seems, found a mod to replace the underwear skins with nudity skins. Although it looks crap, wrong colour (too light)and all. Can't have everything I guess. I just found it cool to be able to dress up your character all the way from nude to fully dressed. Buy different brazieres etc.
There's a pretty crazy amount of plugins and mods around though, is a very healthy sign of a growing community. I've seen mods under development for new towns (lots of doors lead nowhere still, but..), even one that added a whole new island with chars and quests on it.

Heh. Trust me, if you ever do the Tribunal temple quests, when you get to the Silent Pilgrimage you'll be wishing you could reload to get a different one. (Travel across the entire distance of the continent to a shrine at a the remotest point....without saying a word to anyone. No fast travel, and have to avoid towns so no one speaks to you unbidden).
Thank god the designers let you fail that one and move on to the next quest, or I'd -still- be doing it.

Exactly my point. Daggerfall was inherently flawed because of the randomness/generic-ness, it NEEDED focus. Morrowind is a super game and it offers focus at the price of freedom in the gameworld. The quests for the guilds, etc. are manifold, however they are finite in number (although there are a great number). Morrowind NEEDS to incorporate some randomness. Even the mob and dungeon (re)spawns are predictable. A little more variation besides random mob encounters would be nice.Originally posted by fable

I will be the first to admit that Daggerfall was TOO random, but it was (and is) still the only game I ever played that offered the feeling of total freedom. Morrowind is a close second, but it has followed the more traditional 'illusion of freedom' CRPG approach. There's nothing wrong with that and I quite like this game...I just wish that the devs hadn't totally abandoned some of the good concepts they pioneered with Daggerfall.
Here's hoping TES IV will be everything (and more) that Daggerfall and Morrowind could have been by utilizing the strong points of both games

When I spoke with Morrowind's project leader a few weeks' ago, he was eager to assure me that Bethsoft was going to get out large mods in the near future. No details, but I'm really curious to see what they have in mind.Originally posted by Bitex

Yes, but it wasn't really random at all. It was simply a pre-figured, repetitive series of quests that sorta went like "Go to ***** and kill ******, then bring me back ******." This got old, very old, very fast.Originally posted by proffate
I also miss the random quests. If you didn't want to follow the main story, you could go into any shop (more than one of a type per town, btw) and get freelance work.
On the other hand, all the factions in Morrowind have extremely distinctive quests.
