The end of the BG series?
The end of the BG series?
I was really happy when I saw the confirmed expansion on the news page.....until I saw this line
Throne of Bhaal is the ultimate conclusion of the Baldur's Gate legend as gamers fulfill their destiny as the child of Bhaal.
So I guess this is the end huh....damn. Not the best wy to go out, playing through a game you've already finished with a few extra locations tacked on

Well, Q. I'd much prefer a 3rd installment that carried on with the same old cr*p until I was a 40th level better-than-a-god character.
Of course, having killed all the Balor's/Demons/Taan-whatevers/Kobold's underpants in every plane by that point, who is to oppose you?
I've enjoyed the BG series but I want it to end, now. IWD/HoW is fresh. I want more things like that. Maybe I'll try something different. Like ballet lessons?

Like ballet lessons??? I believe you can only get to level 20 that way..
(Seriously)
I would rather have more adventuring than the same fights over and over....as Gruntboy said in another thread...what is the difference between fighting Balors at level 30 to 40 and fighting Goblins at levels 1 to 10....none that I can see. As bad as I hate to see it end...maybe it is time.
IMHO

@GB & Weasel, on the one hand, I agree with you that once you can defeat the nastiest of opponents with ease, it's time to move on. On the other, the concept of achieving godhood through heroic deeds (and divine heritage) has precedent in mythology, e.g. Hercules. As long as there is still a challenge, I will enjoy playing. At this point, the logical next step is a confrontation with Baahl himself and/or Lolth herself, and the hordes of major demons, handmaidens, evil (super) heroes, etc. Could be fun.
But if Black Isle wants to continue the Baldur's Gate series, I would like for them to generate a new story line for a new collection of beginning adventurers. I love the low level stuff where the appearance of an ogre can make your knees knock, or the sight of a red dragon makes you wet yourself and run away.

I'd rather not see it end, mainly because there are a lot of unresolved story issues, most of which I mentioned in an earlier thread. I'm not quite ready to give up the characters, yet. The PC I couldn't care less about...the godchild thing was interesting and all, but it's nothing that I can't live without. I like the NPCs, though. What about Minsc's personal quest? Jan's? What about Imoen? We've seen two and a half games on how your character deals with his heritage, how does she handle it? Jaheira? Viconia?
Basically what I'm getting at here is that they've created a lot of very interesting characters. It would be a shame to just ditch all of them simply because the storyline of the protagonist has kind of reached a dead end. They can't possibly bring some closure to all these characters in one expansion pack, unless of course they all die, which might be an interesting possibility. You get the idea.
Let the PC become a god, for all I care. I just want to know what happens to his/her companions afterwords. They're the interesting ones, anyway.

Why not do what Fallout 2 did, have your offspring continue the series. It would still be related to the Child of Bahla's child, but no level 40 or any other silly nonsense.

"This expansion pack wraps up the storyline of the child of Bhaal saga. It's certainly not going to be the end of the Baldur's Gate series, but this will wrap things up for people who played Baldur's Gate, or who have played Baldur's Gate II—some or all of it."

All good things must end. Personally, I'll be happy if they close this one off. As long as they start a new one, in a new location, new plot, etc..... perhaps tie it in somehow with references to this series, but I'd rather see my character retire than become some kind of god-like creature with ridiculous powers.

The offspring idea will not work!!! Not everyone gets a love interest, unless they fix that problem in the expansion! It would severely limit your racial choices in BG3. Even though Anomen did romance my female dwarf, a half-dwarf is not a character choice, unless you're playing Dark Sun. (Besides, I can't stand the creep. My characters refuse to do the 'deed' with him, they'd rather kiss an orc). Korgan would be out for my dwarf, she is of a good alignment, my human monk booted Anomen out, because he was too arrogant. Maby Valygar...
Obviously some of the other games are fresh, with new ideas, but the simple fact is that during BG-BG2 you have speant hundreds of hours with some charcters (Imoen, Minsc and Jaheira having been with me almost all of the time) and you just can't generate that kind of attachment, without the same amount of time put into the new game.
I wish there had been a 3rd game, after all, don't the D&D rules go up to level 25?
As was said though, there's a certain satisfaction in the low level fights, that's missing later on. Problem is, low level, magic is far too wimpy.

How about a prequel? You'd play your mortal parent and the plot would revolve around the circumstances leading up to your BG character's birth? NPCs would include Gorion.

Minsc's parents would be priceless ... and how about some of Jan's relatives that we've heard so much about.

I read the article on the expansion. Apparently, the exp cap in this one is 8 million; with a projected PC level of 40. Holy smokes, kids. This is... insane.
The expanion's gonna have to be a real tuneup of the AI. Also, it's gonna be really hard to run on anything under a godchild CPU. Imagine the spell effects in a mage battle at level 30!
Hang on. Are they going to have to create level 10, 14, etc spells for this?
The Bioware folks have a real challenge ahead of them. This should be interesting.
