I love BG2 I love the premice the world the background, I love reading the books found throughout the game and I find it entertaining to learn about the history of another "world". I played Mechwarrior, if anyones ever heard of it and I started to read the Battletech because of the games and now that I have gotten into this game and the background of it I would like to begin reading the books. I would like some help in choosing the series and books, I would like to start from the beginning. I was looking at one of the other threads and heard you all saying names like Raistlin and some others I don't feel like going back and looking up. That sounded interesting and if someone would assist me and put me in the right direction I would be appreciative.

Raistlin is from the Dragonlance saga: starting with Dragons of Autumn Twilight.

Elminster/Drizzt etc are from the Forgotten Realms series:
The Dark Elf Trilogy (Menzoberazon [not correct spelling] 1st book)
Pools' Trilogy (Pool of Raidiance is the first)
Both of the above are set around the same time.
Or you could go with the Harper series.
The Avantar Trilogy and subseguent book are great for understanding the gods of the realms (and relate to the BG games)
The Crusade trilogy was good also, but any novel from R. A. Salvatore or Elain Cunningham is great (my favorite authors in the forgotten realms world).
There are also books on the Planes. The Bloodwar trilogy being one.

So have a look around, you are sure to find some.

The worlds of Forgotten Realms and Dragonlance are both immense. The most read author of Forgotten Realms is R A Salvatore, with books about Drizzt and friends but also about the priest Cadderly. Elaine Cunningham is also a favourite of mine. I would start with these. The most read authors of Dragonlance are Margereth Weis and Tracy Hickman, with the books about Caramon, Raistlin, Tasslehof, Tanis and so on. Start with these. As for the order, simply look in the first pages of any book to see the chart. I envy you...

Yes Weasel, you're absolutely right (as usual, that is). Reading them a second or third time is, although still extremely good, not the same as the first.
