I am thinking about starting again in either BG1 or 2 with a total mage party with maybe one or none dual classed. However, I have a couple of questions:
1. I don't think you would be able to remove traps unless you had a dual mage/theif right? There is no "remove trap" spell that I could find.
2. For some of the melees it is really helpful to send a tank in to soak up hit points, keeps spelling to a minimum, etc. But I figure a lot of the tank advantages can be realized with summoned monsters, animals, elementals, etc. Comments?
3. Finally, what mix of mages should I use to get the best balance?
Anyone ever done it?
total mage party question

That;s a great idea, i have tried it once, but never finished it.
I can't recommand trying this in BG1, that'll be tough.
You want to use NPC's or only self created character in a MP-game?
To answer you're questions:
1: No you can't remove traps, but you can walk besides a lot of them, or just let them go off and hope you'll get a save.
2+3: Summons can do that, but i would go for a party consisting off

- Fighter/mage (or kensai/mage)
- Illusionist/thief
- Sorcerer
[/list=.]
No more characters are needed.
I would go for the fighter/mage, so that all character are a mage from the start.
But with NPC's can be fun to, there are alot of mage-NPC's
Imoen, Jan, Nalia, Aery
With them in you're party i would still recommand playing a f/m, but you have to decide for youreself.
Have fun, and post the story sometimes.
I do not have the touch, nor do I have the power.

Sorry how could i forget him.Originally posted by lompo
And don't forget Edwin, the best mage of all the NPC!!.
Also when creating a MP-party of mages, try to decide what robe their gonna wear when you play them,
in my try, 3 good-alligned mages where fighting over the robe of good archmagi!

If you want a total-Mage party, then keep it pure. Here's a party of Mages:
(Main Character - Specialist Mage or Sorcerer)
Aerie
Imoen
Nalia
Jan
Edwin
Of course, with a party like that, you'd have three Thieves and one Cleric because of the dual-class and multi-class characters. You could either make use their non-mage skills or play them strictly as Mages, whatever you prefer.
Personally, I like a better balance of skills in my own parties. I recommend that you have at least one "tank" in your party. IMHO, summoned creatures, despite their usefulness, are no substitute; better to have both. It could be a Swashbuckler, Ranger, Berserker, Fighter/Cleric, or whatever. Jaheira and Anomen come to mind--they're spellcasters. Or you could try having a Blade in your party; Haer'Dalis comes to mind. Blades are kind of like weak mages with some combat ability, you know. Perhaps you could have a Fighter/Thief in your group (dual-class or multi-class), which would take care of your thieving needs as well as your need for a "tank". (None of the NPC's fit the bill.) Or you could have Imoen in your party. She's a powerful Mage, but she also has enough thieving skills to get the job done. Or there's Jan, a Thief/Illusionist. Of course, it also wouldn't hurt to have Cleric in your party. Even though a Cleric is not a Mage, you could play your Cleric strictly as a spellcaster if you wanted to. IMO, a spellcaster is a spellcaster. Well, sort of, anyway. Aerie might fit the bill, since she's a Cleric/Mage.
So here's a party you might consider:
(Main Character - Specialist Mage or Sorcerer)
Aerie
Imoen (or maybe Jan)
Nalia
Haer'Dalis (or maybe Jaheira or Anomen)
Edwin
Obviously, we're no longer talking about a total-Mage party. Do with it what you will. I have to admit I wouldn't play with a party like that, but it's certainly playable, and it could be a lot of fun.

an all mage party is very viable...
My advice is to be carefull in the early game, goi spells save your life often and always have a few mages start things with big area spells before summoning
four or five mages is alot of firepower, consider that in many early to middle game fights summons wont even be an issue as alot of stuff will be *exploded* instantly
Death fog is an absolute must.. get it as quick as you can, its earliest available way to bring down goi'd mages, apart from peirce magic which has some problems, stagger the casting on death fog and they wont be able to cast
Thats my advice anyway, mages are good fun.. in the late game everything dies so fast its funny
