Question Re: Monster XP (Spoiler?)

Post by Aramant »

The spoiler heading is due to mention of a couple important monsters in the game... some might not know they're there.

Anyway...

I've noticed that, after killing certain monsters, I get no XP. It seems to happen against monsters that should, all things considered, give me a great deal, as well, like a Lich-summoned Pit Fiend, or the Shadow and Red Dragons. Is this a known bug, or am I just really, REALLY unlucky?

What is your current xp? I might have hit the xp cap of the game.

I think the game designers changed things around so you don't get xp for killing summoned demons in order to stop people camping and casting gate and protection from evil lots of times to get tons of xp without doing very much.

Killing stuff while shapechanged to a mindflayer won't earn you xp either.

I am most assuredly not capped on my XP... My ranger is only level 12, and I have ToB installed. Additionally, all I used to killed the Shadow Dragon was a few of Yoshimo's snares, which did little damage, spells cast from a Wand of Cloudkill, a great deal of Arrows of Piercing, Minsc wielding Lirlacor, or however it's spelled, Keldorn with Daystar, Jaheira with the Sunstone bullets, a Wyvern summoned from a scroll and an Air Elemental summoned from the Staff of Air. And it wasn't just that my XP score didn't raise... When I capped out in my last game, the XP message still popped up if I killed a monster. That didn't happen with the Dragon.

Besides the above instances, I can't think of any other times when the xp isn't dished out...however, I've recently fought the improved red dragon and I got no xp for that. The battle was so chaotic I have no idea what finally nailed the beastie but something did and I missed out on 64000xp.
a Wyvern summoned from a scroll and an Air Elemental

Maybe these were turned hostile by your cloudkills and killed the dragon?

As for the summoned beasties, I doubt they killed him, as they were dead first out of anything, and besides, I'm very careful with area effect spells, and target them behind the baddies so it only hits them.

It's odd, too, about the no XP gain, because it was like that before AND after I installed ToB. I have no mods, patches, etc. at all, so I have no idea what's going on.

Carefull use of the clua set exp command could give you that which you were cheated out of... youl have to do it individually for each char and set there exp to what it is +monsters exp value

Either that or reload to before you fought the beastie and do it again....

Never seen it

I have never seen this happen in any of my games. Is it possible to cut and paste the text portion of your battle here on the forums? That might help.

I don't particularily care for CLUAing and stuff, so that's out...

And as for the battle dialog, well, simplified, it was more or less:

- Yoshimo sets about 4 snares;
- Aerie summons a Wyvern and an Air Elemental;
- The Summons and Minsc (wielding Lilarcor) charge in while everyone else opens with arrows of Piercing and Bolts of Biting;
- Dragon casts Death Spell on Summons before they really do much of anything;
- Aerie casts Cloudkill from a wand behind dragon so it hits only him (this happens a few times)
- Dragon casts a spell that makes the ranged weapons stop working, so Keldorn runs in with Daystar, casts Sunray from it (which does nothing);
- Yoshimo/Jahiera/my Archer stand doing nothing, as they are more or less useless for now;
- Eventually Minsc and Keldorn die, so I send Yoshimo in more or less as a decoy so the draon doesn't come at my character;
- Ditto with Jaheira after Yoshimo dies;
- Same with Aerie;
- Eventually whatever spell it was wears off, and I do a shoot and run tactic with my Archer wearing Boots of Speed and firing arrows of Peircing until Dragon dies;
- Final line in battle was "Thax'iss... blah blah whatever: Death"

Did you check your stats to make sure it really didn't give you XP. Because it might have and just.. you know.... forgotten to tell you.

Problem with the text box rather than fundimental game mechanics, is what I'm thinking.

If you use the cloudkill cheat on dragons, you will not gain exp for the kill unless you charge in at the last second and finish him off some other way.

Summoned monster exp was patched a while ago, that's why you see some older guides telling you this trick even though you can't get it to work.

Also, I recall a long time ago people were having exp problems when summoned monsters got the last hit or did too much damage, I don't know if this was ever fixed.

As aforementioned, the summons were killed early, which was bothersome.

Also, I am unaware of a cloudkill CHEAT. I used a wand. That's it. No cheating. And I didn't check my charcter XP, so I can always try again, but I'm fairly certain at least one character was close enough to level up from killing the dragon.

Kills with cloudkill will grant xp. I don't think Yuusuke was referring to the wand or spell itself as a cheat, but was talking about the tactic of firing a cloudkill or two at the edge of the fog of war where you know a beastie to be. The iffy AI would mean the beastie would sit quite happily in a cloud of toxic gas. This is pre-improved various monsters though, try doing that with the additional and tougher encounters mod installed and see what happens. :)

As I said earlier, no xp were granted when I killed the red dragon. Its also recently happened with the black dragon too, but I reloaded and got the xp as normal. So...I don't know :D

Ah, THAT Cloudkill cheat. Well, even still, I cast it while in melee with the monster, so... anyway...

And I killed him/her/it again last night, and checked my XP before the fight, and discovered it is NOT just a dialog error; I do, in fact, get no XP. This is about the 5th time I've tried so far, and nothing yet. I'm unthrilled.
