copyright question

Post by humanflyz »

Given the Aurora toolset, one can create virtually limitless modules and such. However, if I was to create a module based on an adventures in one the adventures book that TSR used to sell, would it violate copyright laws? What if I was to create a copy of Planescape Torment with the Aurora toolset, would I be violating copyright laws?

i think that the only time you ever have to worry about such a thing is if you were to try to make money off of your creation which is based on another's creation. although i am not a law person, i think that, as long as you follow this, should be okay.

It actually could violate copyrights, view strictly.

But as stated unless you try to make money of it (in wich matter you are also in violation NwNs EULA) I doubt that anybody will give it the time of the day.

You should make sure by asking whomever you are "borrowing" stuff from (e-mail), and/or at least give proper credits where credits are due... and whatever you do, DONT try to make money of it :)

Always a good idea - I made a Civ2 homepage years ago - and asked MicroPose if I was allowed to use material from the game etc.
Was mighty surprised when they actually wrote back that as long as I gave due credit (and send them the url) they didn't have a problem with me duing it :)

when the last patch for Fallout tactic's came out it added an editor..... however it had a clause that what ever you made useing it belonged to the mackers of the game

could this do the same?

@Rattman:

actually, I've heard that it is the same. Bioware and Infrogames have rights to whatever you created with the Aurora toolset. BTW, thanks for the information. I personally don't want to make money out of the things I create, I just want to create them for my own amusement. However, I don't want to do anything that might be illegal.

Wich you wouldn't be allowed to either - so that is proberly a good thing.
The NwN licens will state something like it is in breach of the licens agreement to charge money for 3.part services (sever, modules etc).

Even if you don't want to make money with it, the copywrite owners can still force you to stop.
Good example is the Quake 3 Arena mod "Bid for Power". It was based on Dragonball Z. But they were forced to stop using that name and it's characters. So you had best check before you make a mod, or all your effords can be for nothing.

There is probably a good aspect to the copyright laws when it concerns selling. NwN might have ended up in a Evercrack situation where everyone is selling their high level characters over EBay, just think of the market for an NwN module.

I imagine that Bioware will do a competition for best modules and sell them as a mission pack. Or at a stretch possibly put them up on their website for download.
