This isn't even fun (spoiler)

Post by jsteinha »

There is nothing I can do to kill Irenicus in hell! He simply regenerates to fast to do any permanent damage. I have read here about how his protections wear off, but I have yet to see that happen. I summon five decoys and then some more to fight the demons and hide in the back of the room. By the time the slayer moves down, half my party is dead, amazed, confused or afraid. I am losing patience and need a quick cure.

Have you buffed before the battle? Casting simple protections (Protection from evil for one) Can really help the final battle.

I had done everything. I have finally killed him, but it had nothing to do with anything but luck. In my opinion...

One of the most important factors in winning this battle is the position of the summoned creatures at the beginning of the battle. If the demons get by them, an you have to fight them too much with the PC, then you don't have enough hp left to fight the slayer. I had a fraction of a hp left when the scene cut out. I was shocked; I was expecting the big hand.

What lvl were the members of your party? usually, by the time I got down there and met Irenicus for the last time, the fight wasn't hard anymore at all. Levels were maxed by that time (without the XP cap remover), with the remover the levels were from 20-28. Main char alone tanked most of the demons, while second tank was keeping Slayer busy. Rest of the party were using ranged weapons and were spread out to pelt the mobs what the tanks were whacking.

Main thing was to have the tanks hasted and with as good as possible AC. The initial buffs, what you can put on just before you use the last tear, will and do wear off even before you are quarter through the fight. But if you got to Hell at the lower level - by going through the game fast :) - then yes, it can be peskier. Basically I ignored the Slayer and killed the rest of the rabble. The Slayer keeps porting around and so I kept the party moving in circles over the whole area, while the tanks were dealing with the demons in the centre. After the demons were dead, I hit the Slayer hard with all the debuffing and protection removing spells and tanks just chopped him into minced meat :D

Ah yes, one Hasted fast casting healer is also handy there, when you need the extra heal, more then potions can give. Basically Aerie (cleric/mage) was filling in that spot, Robe of Vecna + Amulet of Power reduce the spellcasting speed nicely and she was blasting out the big healing spells faster then it took to drink a potion. But, you can do without this as well, just keep the healer then out of the harms reach :)

I did a lot of buffing before the fight too. When Irenicus and company burst in I ran to the southern stairs. This way the demons can't surround you and can only attack your frontliners.
I conjured up some help and moved them forward so Irenicus' demons would be busy fighting them. That way I could use ranged weapons and spells to soften Irenicus' demons up.
The most important buff-spells are haste, protection from fear, protection from evil, true sight.
When Irenicus is alone send in your tanks and/or conjured help and let your mages strip Irenicus spellprotections away.
Hope this helps some... :)

A spell that can also really help you out during that battle, is "Holy Smite" (but only if you are non-evil). Casting it with Anomen as fast as you can, will result in max 9 area damage spells that do 20d4 damage. That should take care of the demons :D .
Also, as others have already said, buff spells are a must. What I use:

- Protection from Evil
- Protection from Fear
- Haste
- Improved Haste
- True Sight
- Chaotic Commands
- Righteous Magic
- Draw upon Holy Might
- Stoneskin/Iron Skins
- Chain Contigency (filled with Abi-Dhalzim's Horrid Wilting for Imoen or Holy Smite with Aerie) -> Cast it from a scroll if necessary
- Spell Trigger (Chain Lightning)
- Spell Sequencer (Flame Arrow)
- Minor Sequencer (Magic Missile)

A few summons:
- Summon Deva (ToB)
- Greater Elemental Summoning (ToB)
- Mordenkainen's Sword
- Fire Elemental
- Earth Elemental

Spells During Combat:
- Holy Smite
- Breach
- Magic Missile
- Lower Resistance
- Breach
- Breach :D
- ...
