confusion and beholders

Post by LeTz »

first of all, i would like to know something about confusion.
is there any way i can protect my warrior from confusion & domination spells? and if he's already confused (or dominated)
is there any way to remove it? (i know that dispel magic doesn't work in that case).
second of all, i would like to get some pointers about beholders.
what's the easiest way to kill them? and what if i suddenly encounter a whole bunch of them?

that all for now.
thanx.

I usually have Jahiera cast chaotic commands on my tank before he charges into battle...That protects against the mind attacks.

Beholders...I usually summons some creatures...skeletons, fire elementals, etc...Haste them...Have them attack...Then hit the beholders with ranged weapons and spells....Big groups of gauths are still pretty tough, though....I also use some area effect spells.

I think goi pretty much has guaths by the balls... since they dont throw much as you thats higher than a lvl 4 spell

Not sure though, if goi works on beholder rays

Spell immunity : necromancy, will save you alot as low to mid lvl beholders use alot of "couse wounds" type spells
-->Instert cool sig here<--

Behold!

I'm pretty sure (75%) that if you cast Chaotic Command after confusion, it'll cancel them out. Also, try Charming confused characters with your own character.

Hands down easiest way to kill Beholders is to use a Shield of Balduran. Which you can buy from....god, what'sherface at Waukeen's Promenade. She is in the Adventure Mart. You need to have the Colllector's Edition files install for her to be there. Or was it the Pre-Order Edition? Anyhoo, both those are legally available for free on the net. Strap on the shield, and bumrush a group of Beholders, then just stand there like an idiot. Watch out because 'spells' from Elder Orbs will not be reflected by the shield(very evil spells like Imprisonment), only "Rays".

If you don't have that, you can also get the Cloak of Mirroring from the Sahuagin City. This only reflects spells that do damage or cause death, like Detrification and Disintegration. Confusions and Stuns will still make it through.

The last method I'll go into is to just Magic Resist your ASS OFF, via equipment. Get one of your best hitters up to about 30% magic resist, send him/her into a group of unibrows and just pray.

I usually try and take out the Elder Orbs first, since they can Imprison, then take out the Beholders, since they can insta-kill, then go for the gauths, they can't do jack except damage.

may be considered spoiler

Items protecting from confusion:

- aeger's hide
- equaliser
- lilacor

items protecting from domination:

- helm of charm protection
- adjatha the drinker
- equaliser
- lilacor
- blackrazor
- corthala family armour

maybe some i forgot in both categories.
of course,
- greenstone amulet
- chaotic commands
- potion of clarity
- spell immunity: enchantment
will protect you from almost any mind-effecting attacks, as will
high magic resistance, babrarian rage, and berserk - but noot every char has these abilities

after a charecter has been dominated/confused, you can:

- dispell magic spell (not that good, may dispell useful effects on other party members, and may fail altogether)
- domination on that char (actually, not bad, as only the last effect is in order - i.e. he will turn from red to green, and will stay green circle, but may save vs. your spell)
- my favorite: dispell with the staff of the magi (good %%, +4 to hit from invisibility, not a great damage, try untill succesfull.) i've seen someone call this tactic "Imoen's whack on the back of the head - sorta: hey, what's up with ya?"

ok, so here's i did it through the beholder dungeon.
i've protected all my party with chaotic commands, and casted on
myself (sorceror) minor spell turning. i left my party in a strategic
point and that walked and casted death fog and fireball.
from that point it's very easy. the death fog slowly kills them, and the one's whice staye alive are very injured which makes the
killing much easier.

thanx for the help.

You guys don't have Xyx's smart beholders installed, do you? ;)
I cannot be caged.
I cannot be controlled.
(I probably cannot be contained either) :p ;)

:D Good one!

Anyway, if you want the beholder to behave as they should, follow Alson's advice and download Xyx's Smart Beholders...
Then the hard time with them will begin.... ;)

Finish Xyx's smart beholders with a single Anomen with Shield of Balduran and Flail of Ages after 10 minutes. whole beholder lair in underdark wiped out.
You know, this reminds me of that time... waay back...

But they ARE smarter. Of course if you send a single char with that shield there's little they can do...
Still, if you installed Xyx's Beholder Hive Upgrade too, there's an Hive mother in the lair, with many magic abilities.... some of them
can pass, and she's hard to kill.
The guys come all together if you hit one of them, and even with
the shield equipped I had troubles, as the elder orbs kept imprisoning me....

Once I had, at that point of the game, a melee-weak party, so really I had to scout invisible and then cover the area with skull traps at the cross- points....

Killing Beholders

As said before the Shield of Balduran is VERY useful when killing beholders. And with Elder Orbs I´d summon a lot of creatures (not some Monster Summoning lvl1 but Aerial Servant for example) and then I´d attack with my hasted warriors...good hunting :p
The less you know...the more happier you´ll be.

The 6th level spell Mislead is great for clearing both the Mindflayer lair and the beholder lair.

Apparently Xyx is doing the AI for the Return to Windspear mod. Should be good.
