How do I increase my reputation?

How do I increase my reputation? I am level 19 and a 'protector' in the fighters guild, but my reputaiton is only 3. Any quick ways to improve on that?

Some guilds have more opportunities to raise reputation then others. For example, I believe Legion only will give you 3 points even if you do every single quest. Imperial cult on the other hand is the other extreme; I believe you can rack up over 20 with them. Some missions for the imperial cult even bump rep by multiple points, depending on how you handle them.

Morag Tong is another rep-builder. I believe one point for each writ you carry out.

Has anybody ever discovered a positive reason to increase one's reputation?

Several quests have checks on your reputation; some options are only available or workable for a character with a high rep.

I believe it also effects NPC disposition.
