Anyone see the US vs S. Korea game last night? Looks like the US will make it to the second round!
CE You must be excited about the upcoming game against Argentina.
I'm definitely going to be watching Germany vs Cameroon and France vs Denmark tomorrow.

Yeah man...only in England it was half seven in the morning. I am pleased to say that not much work got done yesterday, owing to the three matches:
USA 1 - 1 Korea
Belgium 1 - 1 Tunisia
Poland 0 - 4 Portugal
just in case anyone missed anything . I managed to only attend two lessons, spending the rest of the day in the PHSE room with a bunch of mates watching the world cup...
The Poland Portugal game looked at the beggining as if Poland might have stood a chance...Figo didn't look too hot, and after the USA match, I didn't think they were really on form...but it was clear that the Poles were getting really nervous. The fouls on Jaou Pinto (sp?) were really nasty. A shame too, because one of my best friends is Polish, so we were all cheering for them . Ah well....

Love and Hope and Sex and Dreams are Still Surviving on the Street
Well, in Russia (at least when I was there last) they sold beer on the streets, 3%, as non-alcoholic so that anyone could buy it, and there didn't seem to be any laws governing minimum legal age, as we (about 15 at the time) had no problems going into offies and buying whatever we wanted - vodka, wine, whiskey - without asking any questions. This could of course be the well-documented "fleecing tourists" syndrome, but it was still rather amazing that anyone could buy alcohol and drink it in public without batting an eyelid. But if you jaywalked - well they were on top of you like a ton of bricks. Strange country, lovely country, unlucky country.Originally posted by Tamerlane
I'm not surprised though, considering that they allowed street drinking. Its just the extent of the damage that has left me disappointed.

Like HLD suggests, there's a lot more to the riots in Moscow than football. I haven't been to Russia for close to two years now, but I used to go there quite frequently and I have several friends there as well as Russian guest researchers at my lab. From what I know, football is not a huge sport in Russia, it's nothing like in Italy, Brazil or the UK. Russia is a society with many deep problems, and these are highly visible in Moscow, where the enormous class differences meet. Moscow is the finacial centre of Russia, and most of the very wealthy people live there.
I don't think this riot was so much about football as other things. Also remember there is a long history of conflict between Russia and Japan - they still have no peace treaty because of the Kuril Islands.
@Locke: Easy man, it's only a game I think Italy will make it anyway, I'm sure they can beat Mexico.

The US has really played surprisingly well so far, it looks almost certain they will make the next round now South Korea have also played very well, but I doubt whether they can snatch a point from Portugal, seeing Portugal has got themselves together after the inital loss against the US.
The Russian hooligans? That's strange I didn't notice what they were wearing at the short news report I saw yesterday.Originally posted by Yshania

I don't agree with this, what Rivaldo did was merely professional. If he should get fined for over-exaggerating the result of an action that justifyingly deserved a red card (kicking the ball at him!), then all other 'actors' should get fined, too...including those who've faked or exaggerated fouls in the penalty box already in this Cup (I'm sure there's been at least several so far).Originally posted by Locke Da'averan
brazil has good players like ronaldo and carlos, but still after everything, rivaldo lost all respect from my point of view with that act in the corner kick against turkey...
Yes, it's a shame about the riots in Russia. What I don't understand is why? After all, Russia still look fit to pass the group stage in second place IMO.

32 games have been played...and from this point on, it's either you're in or out as we reach the last matches of each group!! Will France (with injured Zizu) be knocked out by Denmark tomorrow? Will Italy beat 6-point Mexico? Will the co-hosts both pass the group stage? IMO, from now on, watching the games will be like takin' a rollercoaster ride.
WOHOO! Rock on, World Cup!

Re the final matches of this group - I start work at 7:30 (when the games start) and we have been permitted a tv in the office for the England games only I have my uses!

I think France will be knocked out by Denmark, and I believe Italy will beat Mexico and make the next round. I also think England and Sweden will go on from the "group of death".Originally posted by Lost One

More words of wisdom from the mind of sleep right to your living room and/or work place:
Apparently they have produced a new ball for this tournament, replacing the reputable Nike and Mitre balls with some shoddy ball that represents those balls one finds at the local beach.
This my friends is the reason why we have seen so few decent 25-30 yard goals; the balls. They are extremely light and cause all manner of problems. I can recall only one free kick from Totti that looked likely to fly in (apart from Roberto Carlos effort which actually did go in) Opinoins?

I'd have to get drunk every night and talk about virility...And those Pink elephants I'd see.
@Sleep I concur but as the tournament continues the players should (and hopefully will) adjust to the balls weight and we might see a big rise in those types of scoring oppurtunities.

France lost? Damn. I was betting on them oh well. So who is in for sure? And how are the Italians doing over all? Are they in or out?

Congrats Denmark They played excellent, unpenetrable defense and I never had the feeling France even got into the game. Denmark seemed to have full control all the time. I can't believe the reigning champions didn't manage to score a single goal.
@Xandax: Sörensen was outstanding Who knows, maybe Denmark and Sweden will meet in the next round?
@CM: Italy is still hanging in there, they'll advance to 2nd round if they beat Mexico.
Senegal through as 2md in the group, a game with a lot of action. Senegal won 1st half with 3-0, Uruguay won 2nd half with 3-0. Morales was very close to score for Uruguay in the final minutes, but Senegal, the newbies, got a draw and made the last 16 Congrats Senegal!

Today so far:
France didn't make it, even with the addition of the not-so-ready Zidane. Denmark played once again very simple and managed to win France. France despite the other problems can also blame its bad luck as well, they just couldn't score. Gongrats to Denmark
Sevegal - Uruguay, i have to see this match(showed the same hour with France game. Sevegal apparenlty made it to the next round! final score 3-3, with Sevegal lead with 3-0 at the end of the first half!
EDIT: No need to conceal anymore
