Alchemy: in the beginning

Post by Andrinor »

I'm playing sort of a ranger-ish character, using a longsword and bow and support magic. I've got alchemy as a minor skill, but I'm having some trouble with it because it's only level 10 and almost every time I try to make something, it fails, and I have trouble even finding combinations that will make anything at all. Any advice?

Yeah: work up some nice cash reserves, then buy yourself some extra alchemy training. It's just not worth acquiring all the ingredients and wasting them on potions with a 10 skill.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

You could try eating the ingredients instead, this will increase your alchemy skill. I assume you are proficient enough to read at least one of the properties. Saltrice is a particularly useful ingredient to try sine it restores fatigue.

Also you should get some Journeyman or higher equipment. If you go the mages guild in Ald-Ruhn there is a back room (just left of the guild guide) disarm the trap and unlock the door, one of the crates has a load of equipment in it, plus that room is full of herbs...
I'd have to get drunk every night and talk about virility...And those Pink elephants I'd see.

i think you need at least a 15 in alchemy to recignize the first property.
just pay for some training, it shouldn't cost you more than ~400 to get from 10 to 15.

How to become a master alchemist in 3 easy steps.

1. Go to Caldera to the mage guild go up the stairs behind the doors and steal the masters set of alchemy gear.

2. In Caldera inside the mage guild get a port to wolverine hall. Go to the imperial shrine there is a bald guy who sells marshmarrow and saltrice.
A. Buy 10 saltrice and 10 marshmarrow ~22 gold.
B. Sell 10 saltrice and 10 marshmarrow back to merchant ~12 gold returned
C. Buy 20 saltrice and marshmarrow for ~41 gold.
D. Sell back all saltrice and marshmarrow.
E. Repeat as many times as you need to get as much saltrice and marshmarrow on the merchant as you want ~640 of each is plenty.

3. Equip the masters alchemy set you stole in step 1. Place a stack of saltrice and marshmarrow in gear hit make potion button like trained monkey.

Now after a little time ~30 min you can go from 5 skill to 100 skill if you want to stick with it. You need about 1k gold in starting money to go from 5 to 100. You sell back low end potions to the merchants in wolverine hall to make back the money invested. By the time you hit the skill lvl you want to be at you will have plenty ~2000 potions in inventory/ground. For more fun go over to the other guy in the shrine and buy stacks of netch leather and corkroot bulb and make fortify int potions before you make potions.

In the back room of the Caldera mage's guild, there is a full set of master's that you can borrow.

If you want to raise alchemy, just go to the Khajit in the Balmora mage's guild, buy crab meat and hound meat. Make restore fatigues. Sell them back for more crab and hound meat. Rinse, wash, repeat, you'll gain about 1 alchemy every 20 attempts until 100 skill.
