thaco for thief?
I am in irenicus' dungeon with an assassin and it seems like i cant hit anything. The only thing i can effectively hit is the little rat things. Its even like that with backstab. Will this always be or just the first few levels.
My other qestion is what other class is fun to play. (thief wise), i absolutely have no idea which one to pick. I dont want to play anything other then a thief. If swashbuckler had backstab i would be half way through the game right now. SO is there any other good thief types that are actually fun to play. You can also include multi class types too. Thanx
Once i pick my class ill be so happy. I havent been able to get anywhere due to class selection. Ive had this game since JANUARY. Its killing me so please help.

You shouldn't worry so much about the class selection - most classes are incredibly fun to play as the game itself is so good.
The Assassin will hit more often than not later on, so don't worry about that. I Fighter/Thief will hit even more often and also be able to hold his ground better afterwards. On the other hand, his backstab won't be quite as effective as that of an Assassin.
You should first decide if you really want the backstab or not. Will you use it often? Will you use it all the time?
Do you like to lay traps? You want to be able to throw spells? You absolutely want to dualwield?
If can't make up your mind about the kits, maybe you should play a True Class (no kit)? You could also look a bit to your future party members. If you include Valygar there is maybe no need for you to be able to backstab as well? If you include Jan, the Assassin's only 15 % per level is maybe no problem as you can devide the thief skills between you?
How about a dual Assassin(10)/Fighter? You'll be able to get 100 % in both Hide in Shadows and Move Silently, you'll get 3 Poison Weapon per day, faster working poison and a x 4 backstab modifier. And you'll regain these thief skills in no time. You can later put *** in dual wielding and ***** in your weapon of choise.
Or maybe a Dwarven Bounty Hunter who lays deadly traps, hides in the shadows, backstabs the enemy Mage to death and then lure the remaining enemies right into his traps and the waiting party?
Or a dashing Swahbuckler, a charming Half-Elf who's high charisma makes the ladies swoon (especially Jaheira, Viconia and Aerie)? Who's extreme grace makes him almost untouchable in battle as he starts a deadly dance with two long swords?
I recommend you to focus upon the RPG aspect of the game. Any class will get you through the game.

Life seems short considering how long you will be dead.

Not until your Fighter/Thief gets Power Attack, anyway.
I agree with robinhood7: trying to backstab with a single-class Thief is an exercise in frustration. Not to mention that when the backstab fails (more likely than not), your character is in a situation where he can't stand his own ground. I mean, if he can't hit the enemy with a +4 bonus, you can't expect him to stand there and fight.
Sure, a Thief's backstabbing improves somewhat as the game progresses, but while you're waiting for that to happen, the Swashbucklers and Fighter/Thieves are taking names and kicking butt. I'd choose one of those over an Assassin or Bounty Hunter without hesitation.
A thief isn't a fighter though, they have the 2nd worst (or 3rd best depending on your disposition ) attack tables.
@ robinhood; as Astafas says ALL classes are great to play, but a thief class can be especially rewarding -- I just love allocating those little groups of skill points each level -- but they do require a certain amount of nannying and micro management in order to avoid getting them squished.

a would say a swashbuckler...wait untill your a high level and get all of his GREAT armour class bonuses and stuff...and change him to an assasin via shadow keeper..thats what i did and gave him a few hitpoints(via shadow keeper)and hes pretty good so try that if you dont mind cheating
I do not fear death, just a painful one
I really can't see the point in dualing so late. When your PC realises his full potential, the game is almost over.Originally posted by Dezarond the Red

Also, I would never recommend cheating to someone who hasn't completed the game at least once. IMO, it takes the fun out of it completely.
@robinhood7
So which class did you go with? Still haven't decided?

my advice is (for both fun and power) dualled fighters
all the fighter kits, as well as the plain fighter, make great theives later, and remove the frustrating early level inefectiveness.
kensai-thief: great backstabs (using the Kai ability for guaranteed max damage).
berserker-thief: great immunities while berserk, plus the extra damage & HP
wisardslaer-thief: great MR, fun spellcaster-disrupting abilities, plus at 3000000 xp in thief get Use Any Item - loose all the penalties of the kit
another fun kit here might be Stalker (ranger kit), with very good backstabs later on.

actually - WS/thief should go above any fighter or thief kit in the end... (quite cheesy tho)
just think of dualing high enough for the 2 extra half attacks from fighter kit (lvl13), gives some nice MR (how much per lvl is it?), d10 HP and full CON bonuses, and the spell failure of course. go for 2 handed weapons. dual to thief, get all the nice benefits, and one day...UAI - Carsomyr.
easily 100% MR with decent equipment, better than any paladin will ever get, grand mastery, set traps, cloaking, probably a second weapon for backstabbing purposes - ownage. actually, this might get even better than kensai/thief with UAI, and no less cheesy ^_^
