Wow! this is one strange World Cup...most of the big scalps taken by younger teams or smaller countries...To see the likes Of Holland not qualify, and to see France do so poorly, and Argentina/Portugal/Italy/Sweden go out before the quarter finals...

Commisserations @ Littiz...

Quarter finals:

England/Brazil
Turkey/Senegal
Korea/Spain
USA/Germany

Semi finals

England or Brazil v Turkey or Senegal
Korea or Spain v USA or Germany

Ronaldo and his team mate Carlos are quoted in todays UK press as predicting the winner of the Brazil/England match will go on to win the cup. Possibly, but who knows the way this tournament has gone?

How about a Senegal/South Korea final anyone? :)

Agree with Ysh -- really surprising WC so far. Wonder what will happen in the games next; if it goes like this all the way there will be Turkey vs. Korea in the final :)

BTW a colleague of mine from my work place is going to see the final in Japan.... grrrr the bastard, I couldn't be more jealous to him...

Thanx for the commiserations Yshania, but I'm not unhappy,
we won!!!!
We scored a REGULAR golden goal, so technically we passed the turn.
Oh, wait, they said that Korea has to pass instead!
Guess their word is what counts, not the field.
...we expected a direction against us, but we wasn't prepared for
such a thing..

of course this cup is strange
I've seen an evident simulation translated in penalty (Rivaldo IIRC) while Totti, who simulated absolutely nothing, has been espelled.
(I'm not saying that I wanted a penalty here, there wasn't, as the defender hit the ball. But Totti simply didn't simulate anything)
We've had FOUR regular goals cancelled.
Of course the results of the matches are strange, then.
It couldn't be otherwise.

Damn.
We love football, but this is too much.
Interests, power, money, play an intolerable role in all this.
From what I've seen today, I'm sure that the thing it's pilotated.
As I said earlier, they keep this sistem of referee + linesmen, so they can gain control when needed.
Today was needed. Just look at the number of koreans at the stadium.......

Although I feel sorry for Italy. No doubt they have been getting very bad calls from the referees... however Totti has himself to blame. This wasn't the worst diving, and he probably hade to fall bbut there is no doubt that he was looking for the penalty and not the goal, as he so often does. Maybe now he'll stop and put his talent to better use than getting penalties.

Here here. Anyway, now would anyone argue when I said that England will win the whole thing? I really reckon we've got a chance. We can beat Brazil...we can beat Turkey, we can beat Germany...Senegal and Spain I am less hopeful about, and Korea, now I really haven't got a clue. :D Then again, I thought Italy were gonna win it, so pay no heed... :)

Yet another World Cup question

Does FIFA test for doping? What is the procedure and what are the penalties? Could it cost a team a match if it turns out that their game-winning goal was scored by a player who was taking a performance-enhacing drug?

FIFA does test for drugs, urine tests are sampled randomly from each time and the penalties involve bans for short times to lifetime suspension.

The problem is, sometimes natural substances in the body (eg nandralone) can be boosted by the intake of particular protein body drinks and this pings a result on the steroid test. I've had to be careful about that myself as I will be tested when I play aquahockey in Canada (I take protein drinks as training program).

I think it may be similar to other sports that your team will have it's medals removed and the player named, shamed and banned...

In the Olympic Ice-hockey tournament a few players tested positive but it didn't change anything for the team, only for the individual players who were banned.
Dont know how it is in the WC but IMO the team should lose the match that the player played in.

The Savvy of South America vs. The Might of Europe...

... IMHO, the match could go either way. Breaks will count a lot since you cannot take away the seemingly even-matched potential of these two ball clubs.

Some say, THIS IS the WC Finals...

...as for the rest (objectively speaking), Senegal, Germany and Spain...

*fingers crossed for a South Korean upset*
