making a backup copy of the play disc

Post by leeman_s »

Has anyone successfully done this? I tried to make a copy, and this is what happens. I put in the would-be copy of the play disc, the NWN menu comes up. I hit play, and then the NWN screen comes up, but instead of starting, it just closes.

I then put the real disc in one drive, and the fake one in the other drive, opened them up and started examining them. All of the files are exactly the same. That leaves only the autorun exe. I opened those up as resources in MSVC++ 6, and compared those too. They are exactly the same. What could it possibly be?

Remember, it is *ahem* a backup copy only.

Has anyone been able to do this?

A precarious thread Leeman, is it really for a backup only? I'm not sure this should be up. If you really do want a backup, I suggest you ask Bioware about it.

Lol. "Precarious" is one word...however in every software license agreement I've ever read (and no, there haven't been that many), the company does allow you to make one backup copy for personal use. I'm pretty sure that the NWN EULA says this, and if it does, there shouldn't be any copy protection of the sort that would stop a copy from working. I'm going to see at some point in the near future because a friend has already managed to get a scratch in his disk 3 and wants to borrow mine to see if it's the cause of NWN not working...I know he has a legit copy though so I'm not too worried. If it's allowed I'll post up whether it worked or not...

The legality doesn't bother me, I know you can do it, it just seems dodgy to me...

I think I read somewhere on Bioware's site that the CD is copy protected. Big surprise, because pretty much all games are nowadays (as they should be).

Is there anyway to get past the copy protection though? The friends who I played the game at had his play CD crushed but doesn't care as he didn't like the game (but I miss playing it at his house as my computer can't run it.) Several people have offered to give him a copy (he did buy it) but they can't copy it.

There is a way to get past, so you know, but I doubt people will take nicely to me saying how :P

Well, I'm not trying to say "do this and you can copy the cd" but it might take care of the problem. (spoiler below)

CloneCD will let you copy any cd's exact data to another cd... might help out in this situation..........

If you run into problems, try looking for a website with the words "game" "copy" "world" in it... has alot of useful info on problems like this.

In no way advocating breaking the EULA or any laws.

Your first suggestion won't get it done, unless you a have a super-duper burner. I've played a warez version of this game successfully, but all that made me do was go and buy it (for $85 flippin' dollars!).

When did the topic of warez come up? I merely was recommending to that forum member how he might make a copy of his play disc and have it work. I just tried it... worked fine for me.

I'm sure it's against the forum rules to talk about subjects like "warez" You wont be able to play any stolen copies of this fine game due to the cdkey you have to verify each time you play online.
