It's a reference to opium, or something similar. If you stagger around the copper coronet, you'll find a secret room, where a bunch of guys are passed out on the stuff.
Opium comes from poppies, not black lotuses, but the room they're showing is definitely an opium den- a cushioned floor, everyone lying down and getting stoned, being weak and silly. Yadda yadda yadda.

Just incase anyone was interested, Black Lotus is a tip of the hat to the card game Magic:the gathering. Black Lotus is the single most expensive card to buy as a single, as it is extremly powerful, and went out of print years ago. by expensive, i'm talking about $300 here. also, black lotus is mentioned in the baldurs gate novel. in the book, it's a poisonus flower used by the zentrem to suround naskel.
i think the reason it get so many mentions is because Magic:the gathering is made by wizards of teh coast, the company that now owns TSR, the people who own Dungeons and dragons, including the forgotten reams campain setting.
everyone clear on that?

Actually, I play Magic: The Gathering, and I dont really think the card is that powerfull. I mean, sure it has free deploy, but ill take one mountain mana for 3 damage ( lightning bolt ) over 3 free mana any day. I think the main reason the Black Lotus is so valuable is just because its in the Alpha set, and has gotten alot of hype.
On a side note: Why did they ban Lightning Bolt from tournaments? It seemed a perfectly good card to me, and much better than that sucky Static Shock.

the reason black lotus was baned was because for the serious potential for abuse. and be live me, it was! it was a major part of a first turn kill. mountain, black lotus fireball and channel. use the lotus to cast channel, allowing you to drain 19 life of yourself into 19 colourless mana. tap mountain, use R to cast fireball with 19 colourless mana, and the one remaining G from channel, (channel costing GG). turn one kill. our opanent hasn't even played a card.
thats only one example. basicly, anything that gets around the one land per turn limit with out any draw backs can be abused to much.
but hey, thats what the experts say. i aint played in a while. i just wish they still printed the duelist!
