I would offer to help Fas, but I don't deal with installation issues normally. Tell us what it's about and we'll see what we can do. As far as my weekend is concerned: no NWN, but I got Warcraft III instead ** pours Fas a cup of Pickwick for a change **

Um, just give me a while and I'll see if I can help. I have to go for a bit, and I'm also trying to set up my new laptop PC the way I like it (problem no. 1: how to access Windows when I don't know the password), so I may have to get back to you. :)
EDIT-How're you liking Warcraft 3 @Eerhardt?

I put this in the tech section as well, but any help would be nice.
To cut a long story short.
I reformated my harddrive.
So i have nothing on it.
Then decided to install windows once again.
So i going to the BIOS, say to run the cdrom first.
No problems.
Then i put in my win98 cd.
Its running.
Does a scan of my harddrives and everything is fine.
Then it comes time to install win98.
It starts up and everything, but jams all the bloody time.
As well as the fact i get errors mainlz SUWIN crashes and i have to restart the computer.
This happens all the time.
I was awake till 3 am sat night wroking on this.
The CD would crash all the bloody time.
So i decided to let it cool down, as the temp went up to 45 degress.
Next day try it again.
Same time.
Try it a 9 again in the evening.
Still crashes.

I have no clue what SUWIN is.
I am afraid it is a hardware problem, hopefully it is just the CD itself, which is pretty old.

** asks Flammie to light a Buck's FIZZ for him ** @Ode: I have both Warcraft I and II at home too, so I can compare. The menu's and commands are still pretty much the same. If you've played WC II before, the game feels familiar and playing the game comes naturally. Of course, the graphics are an entirely different story - going from a 2D isometric view to a 3D isometric view is quite a change ;) . The animated portraits, the idea of heroes (prologue starts with an Orcish hero),... I really like the game so far. I played the first 2 missions to get a general idea, but I'll probably replay it tonight (who knows what items I may have missed, since your hero can carry potions, rings...).

I loved Warcraft 2, actually I was looking around for an old copy but I can't find mine. It was such a funny game. :D
I've seem Warcraft 3 in stores and have fooled around with it. Are the Orcs still the best side to play as? ;)

I haven't had a chance to compare the different races yet, Ode, but I'd say yes :D . Of course, there's also the Night Elves and the Undead... looks like it's all-nighters for me again  .
@Fas: maybe it's a videocard problem? ** takes a drink from his Buck's FIZZ **

Beldin:

@Fas: You might try booting from a floppy and copying the WIN98 CD on our drive - and install from there.
Personally I'm partial to Win2000 - no crashes, no blue screen of death and the machine is faster than with 98... I'd give it a try in your situation.

No worries,

Ok thanks guys.
One of the reasons i refromated my harddrive was because i got a new graphics/video card.
And for some reason it worked fine the first time.
Then windows registry would just install my old drivers instead, and i couldnt use either card.
I couldnt uninstall either one....so i reformated the whole hardrive.
I have the new geforce 2 in, the old one was ATI all in wonder.
And thanks for the link eery.
Beldin how do i copy the cd to my harddrive in dos?

That is exactly what i get.
I did mess around with the BIOS.
So i need to fix something there.

Geforce is a 64 bit card right?
Not 32?

It is not a ram problem, but i did change the ram setting, as the computer kept saying that 133 will be the optimal setting when ever i started up.
So i changed only one thing.
Do you guys know anything else which i could have changed around in the BIOS?

edit:
As for the copy command in dos.
Should it look something like this:

f:\ copy *.* c:

That should copy all the files in f: to c: my harddrive right?

1) Make sure DOS recognizes your CD-Drive. (Let say the Drive is "E:" )

2) Then you type the commands (without the " " ) :

"E:" <enter> - changes your drive to the CD-ROM

"dir"<enter> - lists you the contents of the Windows CD.

The Windows Directory should be named "Win98" if I remember correctly...

If so - type: "copy e:\win98\*.* c:\win98\" <enter>

Sit back and wait. . . . . .

3) After the copying ends - type: "c:" <enter>

"cd win98"<enter>

and "Install" <enter>.

That should do the trick.....

hopefully...

Then you'll have to install the CD-Rom (DOS) drivers on your Bootdisk . (Make your Pick - Floppy or HDD...) - the drivers should come with the CD-Rom drive... - HOW to install them - hmmm I'm not sure I can do that via mail or posting.... Mybe Eerhardt has something, and I'll look into it , too....

No bother, Fas, but like I said, installation is not my area of expertise - sorry :( . I'd suggest getting the right DOS drivers then too, but since you have no OS, you can't surf the net for them. Maybe you can ask somebody else for the DOS driver disks or try and log on to the Microsoft site from somewhere else and download the drivers on 3.5" disks. How to install them is as much a mystery to me, as it is to Beldin... but let's hope your DOS just recognizes the cdromdrive (probably E: or F: ).
