@Fable: why no Star Wars?

@fable i think you missed my point or maybe i wasnt clear:

I was saying that it is good to have this herd mentality as human beings so the truly intelligent people can lead. I mean if everyone wanted to be unique and special there would be nothing unique or special about it. It is this mentality that produces the truly interesting people so I dont understand why you put this down.

I regret that I must completely disagree with you. I don't believe in the "truly intelligent minority" theory: I think everybody has the potential to develop their capabilities. And "being unique" isn't a concern, anymore than "fitting in" is. I gave up any concerns of either of these, long ago.

Is it just me or are you proving this theory by stating that you are correct in youre theory that star wars isnt worth seeing and with your lack of concerns and with a staunch belief that you yourself are right(otherwise why argue this?) proves that you do believe in the "truly intelligent minority". Call me cynical(please do I really am) but I seem to have lost faith in the equal ability of human beings. Also it seems to me that intellgence demands that you believe in the "truly intelligent minority" b/c not everyone is intelligent.

Oh, thank goodness. I thought I was the only one who got the reputation of trying to be weird when I was just being the way I wanted to be.

@Word-The problem there is that it is not necessarily the "intelligent minority" who end up "in charge", and out of the more intelligent people I know most have shared the view that people should learn and think for themselves, rather than relying upon other people to think for them.
However, not everyone is equally gifted, regretfully. Some people are more talented than others, it's not fair but it's the way things are.

Whoa. I never said Star Wars wasn't worth seeing. I said *I* wouldn't enjoy it and wouldn't see it, and I gave my critical estimate of the film, explaining where my opinions come from. This doesn't necessarily hold for anybody else. Why should it? Something can be right for me, and wrong for you. Who says I should tell you what to think? Remember, this thread was started by somebody who wanted *me* to think differently about a group of movies--not the other way around.

On the contrary, the fact that it's so very hyped is a perfectly good reason to avoid it.

Oh, I did overstate this a bit.

But then, the remark that something is good because a majority of people believe it so was too good to pass up for such a reply. I actually wouldn't avoid something because it's well-liked, unless it's a tourist trap. I really don't want to be around one hundred people screaming "John, did you get a picture?" or "I wonder if we can talk down the natives to a reasonable price?"

Don't piecemeal me, please, cobbling together a couple of quotes. I didn't react to Star Wars hype by jumping automatically the other way; I reacted to the almost violent language at times posted in *here* to jump the other way. Big difference.

I grant you that you don't need to eat a whole apple to know if it is rotton...but simple fact is...you could have watched Star Wars in the time you have spent argueing about not watching it.....so the concept of wasting the little time you have seems a bit late.

You think I spent a couple of hours on my replies? No, I did 'em while taking brief breaks from work. They were fun; they present me with a challenge from different perspectives, causing me to reexamine my views and work up sufficient literary justification. I prefer this to the yawning chasm of disinterest that is (for me) Star Wars.

Oh...do you always spend hours of research reading scripts and and analysing every aspect of the unseen movie before you watch a movie? If you do I can see why you'd not bother watching it or have the time.

You mean you've never being asked to do something, had a favorable or unfavorable reaction to the request, and then simply figured out *why* you felt that way?

That's all it is. That, and being able to explain it at length.

Btw, I hope nobody takes my iconoclastic refusals to watch any Star Wars film as my final word on the matter. I'm having fun, here, and I may just turn around and watch a Star Wars film. Only given my schedule, and my interests, I really can't see doing it for, oh, at least 125 years.

You mean you haven't? You've watched whatever anybody has ever suggested to you?

Hell, I don't have time for many movies. Like I wrote above, there's a lot to do, a lot to hear, a lot of read, view, and take part in (in no particular order). I've got several books I want to read through, soon. About thirty CDs I'm supposed to review for a magazine. Two novels I'm concurrently working on. We go to restaurants, take vacations, enjoy sex. Matter of fact, I enjoy it all. I see very few current films. Let's see: the last one we saw, new, was Amelie. Great stuff.

I've also referred to the fact, here, that I stopped watching television about fourteen years ago. Occasionally I catch something, usually once every three or four months, like a Simpsons episode, which I really like. But I don't honestly miss it. I've got my own life, and many sources of entertainment.

That wasn't really my question

. If somebody said to me 'You should see Star Wars' I certainly wouldn't say 'No. I refuse', but that does not mean that I would go and watch it either. I have never actively refused to see a movie AFAIR, but I have just passively missed hundreds. I mean have you ever deliberately not seen a film before?

Really? You've never actively declined to see a film? Interesting. I mean, suppose you disliked a particular film genre--say, "chick flicks," or sick gore flicks, or French New Wave. Have you deliberately avoided seeing any film genre you didn't like?

I'm afraid I honestly can't recall another film I've deliberately not seen when the chance was offered, at least, not recently. If my wife pushed me to see some gore flick, I suppose I'd decline--but then, she doesn't like 'em, either. There almost certainly were examples in the past, but I can't bring 'em to mind. When you're not really paying attention to what's being released, you don't really have to refuse to see anything.

Lazy as can be

I havent read this whole post yet, started and gave in to the urge to post....

One can not fairly criticize unless one is truly knowledgeable. For example... the recent Fox television HORRIFIC right wing special "The corruption of the American Child"

While the show made me sick to my stomach, and enraged me with liberal anger..... I had to watch it all. Every minute. So I could fairly, and correctly write my hateful editorial about it. To criticize a movie about its hype, about its shotty script or crappy acting.... without viewing it yourself first is... well bad. To say the movie is horrible without viewing it is like saying you hate the taste of frog legs, yet never tasted them. Sure one can protest the movie based on its hype and what you have heard. You can even dismantle its creditability by its obvious marketing ploys... you still cant form a truly worthy opinion about the movie until you view it. If you are strongly against it I recommend viewing it definitly, if you dont care and dont want anything to do with it then thats different. Although you have already voiced opinion on it, so it shows your interest in some fashion.

Its a movie, yes a cheesy and over hyped movie, But it was a movie of a generation a movie with a great score, a movie doing things in film that haven't been done before... a good movie.

Personally I love vader, and solo. I claim fanboy status to a degree sure, but I am very opinionated and I believe that while the starwars movies aren't cinimatic masterpieces. It wasn't a waste of 2 hours a piece for me.

Watch the damn movies, you could do a lot worse with your time...

It's instructive that you feel called upon to tell me exactly what to watch, using the argument that "if I haven't seen it in totality I don't have a basis for an opinion," yet yourself didn't bother to read all my comments here, explaining my views, or answering points very similar to yours.

I'll consider everything you wrote already answered.
