Patch 1.4...installed correctly?

OK, I had not had any saved game problems as of last week. I downloaded patches 1.1 and 1.4 and unzipped both into my .../ssi/por file. Now, nowhere on the game when I open it up shows a "version number" so I'm unsure if the patches took. Hadn't worried about it but I've played a few days since unzipping them...I just went to open my most recent save and the "load bar" comes up blank in the middle (you can only see the left and right tip of the load bar) and then I get color pixel lines rotating on the left side of the screen. The cpu freezes and I have to reboot. Thought the 1.1 and 1.4 patches were supposed to fix game save errors?

So, any idea or suggestions on how to tell if I unzipped these patches correctly and what version of the game I have?
