i have just completed the game using a half elven ranger (which i didnt find all that impressive till he reached LEVEL 16!!!!!) so after some thought i considered making a bard BUT wanted to know if he will be much use, with him not being a dedicated spellcaster/thief/fighter i wasnt sure if he was worth the effort
If you feel like playing a Bard, then you should. That's truly the only advice one could give you. I'm myself a huge fan of Bards and will certainly play one later on. I believe it to be one of the more challenging classes in Single Player Mode, though.

I'm playing a Bard. My first character. It's fun and doesn't seem too hard. I have't really specialized in casting or fighting. I switch back and forth depending upon the monsters and who my henchman is. I do keep a bag full of items that improve my AC for melee mode.
The game is going well; I did ALL the chapter one quests and have begun chapter two. Occasionally I have trouble with a boss-type, but reload and change tactics, and only rarely have to reload again.
I am a woman and so is my Bard, and I am a bit nervous that I will miss out on the romance angle later on. *shrug* I'm also wondering when or if I will get some Bard-instruments, but with a henchy and my familiar the Bard-song rocks.
I see occasional posts stating that the Bard is for multi-player mode, but I think that is silly; the Bard is a fine character, especially if you find hack-and-slash boring and pure-casters limited (and wimpy). And, a well-rounded character is a great way to get started in this game.

So the Bard does get a Familiar, just like in BG2? My manual doesn't state so. Are you perhaps referring to summons?

i have taken the plunge and gone for the bard , thanks ppl, if any of you had said that the bard was useless id not have bothered, so far im on lvl 4 and as kibblez says i too am finding it fine. as the ranger i spotted a good number of bard specific and bard usable items, and the bards lore skill is very usefull cos when i was a ranger the amount of item id found yet coudnt identify without using the stone of recall and paying gold to find out what it is was amazing
