Discussion: The best weapon in the Game

Post by Piqsid »

This should be interesting.

Since I'm starting, let me give you my top five.

Number 5:
The Staff of the Magi. This is a great weapon to give to any single class mage. It offers a ton of protection and hits as a 5. It is the perfect weapon for the mage that just likes to sit back and watch the fighters engage in their blood bath while he/she sits back and throws his/her magical damage into the mess. The negatives are that only mages can use it, and it isn't that great as a melee weapon. And since your toughest opponents have a lot of magical resistance, you need something that can do physical damage.

Number 4:
Flail of ages. This is probably a surprise to most, so let me explain. If you rate each weapon by it's power and the ease of obtaining it, this is the number one weapon. It is insanely easy to get considering how powerful it is. It is great for killing trolls ( 1 fire damage). Plus it can turn any cleric into a offensive presence. The first time through the game I gave this weapon to my Paladan on day 3 and she was still using it as her primary weapon at the end of the game. I didn't know about Carosmyr, and had no proficiency in it.

Number 3:
Carosmyr, aka Holy Avenger, aka Kick @$$ weapon. If it dealt 1d4 1, the 50 magic resistance alone would put it in my top five. Get a paladin, give her 2 *'s in 2-handed swords and 2 *'s in two-handed fighting style and forget about everything else. To kill the other dragons I kept switching her to the dragon slayer sword. Don't do this. With two-handed weapon style, you'll get critical hits twice as often - one-tenth of the time - which is about as often as you'd ever hit the dragon with that puny 2 dragon slayer anyway.

Number 2:
Crom Faeyr. I imagine many people would have this as number one. I agree that at 25 strength, the 14 to damage is very nice, but my problem with this weapon is the same reason that Blackrazor is not on this list. You get Crom Faeyr too late in the game. By the time you get it, all you have left is Bohdi, Irenicus, and Hell. To kill the vampires, daystar and the mace of destruction with their double damage makes them just as valuable. With Jon-Boy, it's not his hit points or armor class that makes him tough. As soon as you outlast his spells you could kill him with a sneeze. You might ask why I ranked it so high if I don't find it that useful. It is the best dual weapon ever. Throw it in your off hand and don't worry about the penalty to hit because it just transformed your primary weapon into the best weapon ever. So what is that weapon . . .

Number 1:
Celestial Fury. I don't care how many people disagree with me, you won't change my mind. Like the Flail of Ages, this weapon is pretty easy to get, if you know how to drink potions and set traps. The hardest part about getting this weapon is that you have to kill the guy who's holding it (Kato, I believe). With this weapon, and a high rate of attack and a high save against, you can kill the most powerful foes in the game without them getting of a shot. Stun, Stun, Stun, Stun, 20 points of electrical damage, death. Of course, with Crom Faeyr in the other hand it makes the weapon that much better. Thieves can't use hammers, I believe, but you better believe they can wield katanas. In the end, this weapon is the most powerful weapon that is easy to get. This isn't a list of the most powerful weapons, just the best ones.

So now I want to know what other's think. There are some notables I left of the list. I mentioned the Mace of Destruction. Daystar can do over 1000 damage to shadow creatures with it's sunray. There is that 5 sling, the sling of Everwhatever, but come on, it's a sling. I don't want your opinion of what the most POWERFUL weapon is, that is a simple question for mathematicians. I want to know what you think the BEST weapon is.

Yes I would probably have the same top5. Only I don't like particular orders, mainly because different people use different weapons.

Flail of Ages is one of my favourites, I dual wield it with Crom Faeyr, but it gets bumped out of the list by none other than Blackrazor, which I think is the best weapon in the game.

Ok. There are alot of polls similar to this but i'll reply anyway.
5.Flail of Ages- Slow abiltiy and is good otherwise
4.Dragon's Breath- incredible extra damaging abilities. I just like halbreds anyway.
3.Mace of Disruption- Makes Twisted Rune, Kangaax,Liches and Vampires too easy
2.Celestial Fury:Amazing special abilities especially the stun.
1.Staff of Magi- The best wepon especially for fighter/mages. +5, invisbility makes soloing as a soceror waaaay too easy, spell trap since you can't get the spell memorized this is as good. Pro. from 30 levels of spells! Holy ****!!!!!!!!
I usually never make the crom faeyer cause i prefer to have the girdle of frost giant strength and the gaunlets and i usualy dont have anybody beyond specialized in warhammers. Blade of Roses, Vorpal Silver Sword, SLing of Everand, Blackrazor come a bit behind.

Admitted, Blackrazor comes really late in the game, but that won't stop me from using it in Throne of Bhaal.

Just wanted to add that.

Now, did you want a list over the BEST weapon in the game, or which is the easiest to get?

So, Carsomyr and Crom faeyr is hard to get, but what has that to do with anything?

My top 5
1)Crom Faeyr, no great specials, but onehanded means a lot, and you can hurt almost anything with it, and kills most things in 2 or 3 hits, who needs specials then? Also expect about 6-7 better THAC0 than most other weapons.(thats ALOT)
2)Well, probably goes for blackrazor there, some great specials..
3)Carsomyr. Being a +5 weapon and all. It gives 50 magic resistance, which can be very good. Too bad it is used only by paladins..
4)Staff of magi. great for mages, cant be used by others. For a kensai/mage it would be the top of this list, it wont get better than that.
5)FoA/Celestial fury, you pick. Although these have great specials they lack the damage, and why slow/stun an opponent when you can just kill him? Also they have low THAC0 compared to the best..

Now, Crom faeyr is onehanded, and therefore it can make another weapon very powerful as well, thats another reason it is top.

This topic has been beat to death and this really ought to have been added to one of the earlier discussions...since it's here though:

1) Staff of the Magi: Instant, Whenever I want it invisibility is TOO powerful. Not to mention 8 hour Spell Trap, +2 AC, etc.

2) Flail of the Ages: If I was playing a fighter and could take any one weapon to a duel, this is the one. Why? Because I would win. No-Save slow is much stronger than you might think. Plus, it's one of the most damaging weapons in the game.

3) Crom Faeyr: Str 25 adds a lot of damage and Thac0 plus wiht its 5 points of electrical it's the most damaging single handed weapon in the game.

4) Celestial Fury: #1 for a backstabber. Stun effect is very nice (permanent Stunning Blow).

5) Carsomyr: If it weren't for the Cloak of Mirroring and so abilities and items that give immunity to a variety of spells this would move up the list.

Honorable Mention: Blackrazor (too late in the game and specials too rarely triggered to put higher), Defender of Easthaven, Staff of the Woodlands (too late in the game and would be better if druids were)

People and their duels... Monsters cant survive long enough against pure damage of Crom faeyr, like people duelling can. However, my main char always uses ring of free action, so the flail wouldnt help you...

1) Carsomyr: 50% MR, Dispel Magic, +5, 'nuff said

2)Crom Faeyr: The stenght bonus is very good, Viconia and the Girdle of Fortidude with this hammer is a great combo, a bit of a waste though...

3) Celestial Fury: Backstab weapon Nr.1! Chance to stun, +20 electrical damage(can be resisted though)

4) Staff of the Magi: Invisibility, Spell trap, best Mage staff, except for plain melee, Staff of Rynn is better there!

5) Flail of Ages: Slow ability, elemental damage, very nice if dual-wieled with Crom Faeyr...

each weapon has its uses and the times when u need em.
for example, i dont have a paladin in my party and i did not waste my items for crom faeyr.
when it came to fight kangaxx i was complaining and whining on this board how to kill the demilich form.
staff of magi.. spell trap(protects vs imprisonment!!!!) and +5 weapon. demilich is dead.

on the other hand ur fighting normal guys with low resistances. celestrial fury stun then kill.

u fighting with kewl bosses who cant be stunned.. oh well.. Flail of Ages slow ability(with no save) comes into use, and if its a mage with stoneskin, the +1+1+1 damages get past the stoneskin and hit the mage.=spell failure

i mean there can be many many other examples to list which weapon is most handy in what situation. but simply looking at its description,(forget about the time u take it etc, i mentioned why above) Blackrazor seems to be most "powerful"weapon in game..

dont mix "power" and "efficiency"

this topic has been discuss b4 and i think the best weapons will be very depending on your style and your character.

1. holy avenger probably has the best attack stats. but only can be used by paladin.

2. staff of magi has great abilities and not bad attacking stats. but again only can be used by mages.

3. Crom Faeyr is another great weapon with increasing your strength to 25 and can be used by most of the classes. but a bit slow

4. flail of ages is aother great wepon especialy dual wielding.

5. Celestial Fury, a good weapon , but i rarely use it now

6. personlly mace of disruption +2 is my fav. weapon , it is the best weapon against undead.and it killed the demi-lich n the very first round. very sweet.

thus my conclusion is, in a given class, a given enemy and situation, difference weapn is needed!!!

My opinion is definitely biased, but I think the short bow of Gesen deserves a place in my top 5. Image

My archer is my all-time favorite PC. And to an archer, the Gesen bow is solid platinum. Being a +4 ammunitionless weapon, it can hit any creature in the game, even the demi-lich Kangaxx, with ease. The only enemy I've ever faced that my Gesen bow couldn't plug full of holes was Irenicus, during our first encounter where Absolute Immunity was of utmost importance in his contingency. It does more damage than your average bow (2 + 1d8), and its electrical damage makes it great against mages with stoneskin. While it may lack some of the other bells and whistles that the top 5 melee weapons have, it's still my death-stick of choice.

Against monsters, the slow effect is very nice against Sarevok, Demons, Wolfweres, etc. Any creature that gets multiple attacks is severely weakened by it. Beyond that, slowed creatures are easier to continue to hit (only important against very good AC's).

As far as Ring of Free Action, I believe the Flail overrides it. I know it can slow a monk. But even if not, it still does as much damage as anything except Crom Faeyr...which should be in the other hand. Additionally, the monsters you should care about will have at least as many HP as your fighter.

Think one should start a new topic where one compares the weapons, not when you get them, what you have to give up, etc etc..

A true comparision is weapon to weapon..

holy avenger, for bun bun, is mandatory. 3 great qualities...

dispell magic per hit,
magic resist set to 50%, thus reequipp robe of vecna and ring of gaxx and amulet of power to set to 75%!!!
duble damage to chaotic evil

big metal rod and frag grenade!!! cast g deathblow, and blew away master brain and flayer guards in one shot!!!

common, standard wooden quarterstaff, or common bastard sword, or common plain arrows...PROTECTION FROM MAGIC WEAPONS!! punches right thru...

shalizzim (?) sword of elhan the leader or war elves in elf city....
+1 sword, kills BARDS instantly, -4 penalty...giggle...haer dalis, old buddy, look what I picked up in the elf city!!!

firetooth...with g whirlwind, and +4 bolts, think infantry heavy machine gun...hmmm...you think with plain bolts will punch thru prot from magic weapons and still deliver fire damage??? good mage siuption right there, and will still get thru stoneskin...
They call me Darth...

Darth Gizka!
