problems understanding AC

Post by Axon »

Ok, just so I clear it up in my mind, how exactly does AC work when using multiple items of AC enhancement and so far. I was hearing something about an amulet of natural armor can be worn with a ring of protection, but not another natural armor. Is this right?

It's pretty straightforward. :)

If you have more than one magic item equipped which adds the same type of bonus to your AC, they don't stack; rather, the item with the largest bonus will be used.
e.g. You wear Chain Mail +2 (Armour bonus) and Bracers of Defense +1 (Armour bonus). You will receive the bonus only from the Chain Mail.

If you have more than one magic item equipped which adds a different type of bonus to your AC, they do stack.
e.g. You wear a Ring of Protection +1 (Deflection bonus) and an Amulet of Natural Armour +2 (Natural bonus). You will receive the bonus from both items.

:)

Edit to add -
This means it's possible to get a very high armour rating from different sources. My Cleric finished the game with ...

+4 Armour bonus (from splint mail)
+3 Shield bonus (from a shield, funnily enough)
+5 Natural bonus (from an amulet)
+3 Deflection bonus (from a cloak)
+3 Dodge bonus (from boots)

Anyone know if there's any other types of armour bonus btw?

Straight from the manual (pg 114):

"Modifier Range: -5 to +5"

"There are five types of AC bonus in NWN: armor enhancement, shield enhancement, dodge, natural, and deflection. Only dodge bonuses can stack, up to a maximum of +%. For all other types of bonus, the single highest modifier is applied."

So the way to tell is by looking at the items/spells/etc (they tell you which type of AC bonus they give).

Yes, umm, RTFM, always a good place to start. :o
I don't know which version of the manual you've got, but my P114 has Cleric spells.
