Yes and no.
The shia sect is/are desecndents of the very few people who survived Karbala (this is a long story, i will find a link to it) but basically what happened is that a ruler (muslim or not not sure), besiged the family and close friends of the holy prophets grand children when they were on an important mission. They encircled them and did not let anybody leave or allow water or food. This is when the grand children and the children of Hazart ali were killed. I am not very well versed on the history of the shias so it would be best if i found a suitable link.

Which is as follows:
http://www.al-islam.org/short/Karbala.htm

That looks pretty right in my eyes, but i have only skimmed over it.

Shias are around the Islamic world, it is not really a cultural thing, as Shias are/were also arabs and from the same tribes that first joined the Holy Prophet(SAW) and Islam.

Many Sunnis see shias as not muslims, as they violate or believe in something that is not allowed in Islam. I am a Sunni and i lack the knowledge to comment on the Shia interpretation. I know that they believe in the Holy Prophet as being the Seal unlike Ahmadies. They follow the same basic principles and the quran is the same. Though i have heard they have changed the Kalma (i dont know how to explain that) and some other aspects. I hope this helps, if not could you be a little more elaborate?

I seem to recall it was the words and terms used rather than the actual content, perhaps i just altered some wording, either that or i was feeling playful ;)

I have one you may answer if you wish...

What is the islamic view on masturbation or non vaginal sex?
While others climb the mountains High, beneath the tree I love to lie
And watch the snails go whizzing by, It's foolish but it's fun

Masturbation is seen as haram or a sin.
However culturally as well as religious, there are i guess you could call them acts or procedures where a male can enlarge is organs.
How? not really sure, never actually tried it.
But if you want i can find out :p :D
Sex is only allowed when you are married.
Pre-martial sex and masturbation male or female is seen as a sin or wrong.

But culturally speaking there wasnt much of a problem as kids were married off at puberty so they did actually need to masturbate.
They had their husband or wife around all the time.
Only in present times has this thing arisen.
