what to do?

Post by Illuman »

i am a notorious bg 2 re-starter, and i have played good, evil and neutral, and balanced parties all over the place, beating the game only once but advancing to the underdark about 7 times. i am truly stuck this time because i can not think of a good pc to actually play through the entire game with. i would like a good aligned party of

keldorn
minsc
jahiera
aerie
yoshi\imoen

i just cant decide what to do!!! what should my pc be????

Sorceror... being as you'll have a 5 man party once you grab Yoshimo you'll have plenty of back up. Give it a whirl.

Cleric/Thief

You will add to Aerie's meager spellbook and get to rely less on Imoen's mediocre skills as a thief. You will be able to wreck it up with traps at higher levels and will house it up in combat with the offensive firepower available to clerics later on.

Try taking this test and going with whatever comes up.. or, at least, as close to it as you can get.

Choose the versatile Bard. He'll complement Keldorn, Minsc and Jaheira with his (Improved) Bard Song and ranged attacks (not to mention how extremely nasty he'll be on Tenser's with his protection spells up). He'll complement Imoens thief skills with Pick Pockets and later Lay Spike Trap. He'll complement Imoen's and Aerie's spells with spells of his own. He'll get an armor that allows spellcasting, a good quest, the ability to use all weapons, the ability to use instruments, a familiar...

Either a Cavalier or a human dual-class Ranger/Cleric. Either one will make up nicely for Aerie's rather weak Turn Undead (her multi-class penalties hold that back).

A Cavalier will be utterly wicked at the higher levels; I'd set him up for bastard sword and long sword specialization and 3-point dual-wielding and leave the Carsomyr-lugging to Keldorn; it fits his kit better anyway. Plus the Cavalier's Resist Fear spell, ridiculously numerous immunities, nasty bonuses to demons and dragons, and minor additional healing will prove priceless, especially in ToB, if you have it.

A dual-class Ranger/Cleric, on the other hand, will be a wicked dual-wielder with the blunt weapons of the game. Make his racial enemy Demonic/Fell if you have ToB, Vampires if you don't. You can also have your Ranger/Cleric memorize offensive spells entirely since you already have 2 full-blown healers.

Flip a coin between those two.

I'm very much in agreement with Ryo. Take the test, find out what kind of character suits you best.
From a powerplaying perspective it doesn't matter much which class/kit you'll take. The rest of your team is pretty balanced and you've plenty of experience with the game.
I took some of the less obvious choices (jester, wild mage) and had a lot of fun with those.

My current party is almost the same except I have Jan instead of Aerie (he whines less) and my pc is a cleric/ranger since there is little need for either magic or fighters to balance it (once you have Imoen anyway) and the ability to sit back can win many battles that would be difficult otherwise.

You've just hit on one of the problems I have with 3rd Edition D&D.

Well.. my BG manual says a ranger is a hunter and a woodsman, skilled with weapons and knowledgable in tracking and woodcraft. It seems plausible to me that there could be an evil ranger who prefers the woods to the big city and waylays passing merchants and caravans and such and relishes in the cruelty so often displayed in nature. Nature has no bias towards good or evil..

*shrug*

I, incidentally, was a lawful good elven mage-bard of Mystra.
