OK, what do you LOVE about NWN?

Post by Nygma »

Enough with the negativity! (At least for now. The "What do you hate about NWN?" thread to come later will probably bog down the server.) But there's something that's kept us playing.

What do like about the game? What aspects do you think are superior even to the Baldur's Gate series?

1. Feats - love knockdown. weapon/spell focus, dodge, proficiency feats, etc., they all give a tailoring ability that was not found in NWN's predecessors.

2. The multiclassing - Monk/Sorceror? No problem. Though I guess both 1 and 2 and the skills would come under "third edition implementation"

3. Improved graphics - not the most technically advanced, but a big step up from the BG series. Love zooming in to watch the fights and check out the monster detail.

4. Being able to talk to your henchmen. Granted, this has a ways to go to match PS:Torment and I missed the NPC interjections from BGII, but still nice.

5. Storyline Spoiler: A story about someone other than you. Yeah, this was nowhere near the awesome story of BG. But I loved the whole Aribeth thing. You were actually concerned about the fate of an NPC. 'Course, I'm a sucker for the whole fall/redemption thing. But WHAT was Bioware thinking with the ending? HELLO! What happened to Aribeth? "Many more adventures await our hero." BOOOOO. Who cares! (Sorry, just had to get that off my chest.)

6. Familiars and animal companions - love the hawk that my druid/rogue has as a pet. hate that I have to choose between that and dire wolf! No more keeping your familiar in your backpack for the entire game.

7. [Insight][Persuade][Flirt] nice additions

8. Hmmm, I know I had a bunch more, but I'll finish with: Potential
Looking at what's above, the structure is all there. More depth in the storyline, better encounters, decent hostile spellcasting, NPC parties... there should be some great mods coming down the pike, either from Bioware or the user community. Can't wait!

What do you all think? I thought all but 4 & 5 (story and NPCs) were improvements on BGI & II.

I may get blasted for this but I'm starting to like the henchmen. They give the game a more real feel. More like having another person along instead of just controling another character.

The graphics are pretty cool.

I've only had the game crash once compared to the once a day for bg2.

Animal companions are fun.

I'll probably get blasted for this, but....

What do I -love- about NWN? Nothing. Not one thing.

I played it. I finished it. It wasn't bad. It was better then POR II. And that's about all I can say about it, honestly. It had an awful lot of promise, but it's delivery was decidedly lacking.

Here's hoping the mod scene over the coming months improves my opinion of it.

hmm

1. Very atmospheric graphics e.g.:
a) using a torch in dark places gives very nice shadings and a great feeling of alone in the dark
b) fire elementals, fire and frost giants
c) spell effects, especially the summoning and vanishing circle
d) character animation, they make really nice fights, I have played Anarchy Online before and AO has totally rediculous fights.

2. I like the good story especially the thought out story twists.
a) you do not have to be all good or bad, if you decide to kill one foe and give mercy to the other you do not get punished
b) you do not need to make all quests
c) some of your decisions really mean something *spoil* e.g. you decide to keep a group of people imprisoned in their castle and doomed for ever.

3.The online potential
a) there could be Ultima Online like persitent online worlds

I really love the attention to detail they gave the avatars - all those little waves and bows and cheers and things. :)

When we cast spells from scrolls, we actually see our avatar get out the scroll and read it. How good's that? :D

It's the little things.

  • The forest tileset is beautiful (unlike most of the other stuff...).
  • The 'V' emote menu is reasonably well-filled.
  • The scripting language is great (once you get the feeling for it).
  • The conversation editor ain't half bad (unlike just about all the Toolset's wizards...).
  • Decent portraits, and not only for PCs or key NPCs.
  • Varied dialogue options. All alignments catered for.
My "hate" list is longer...

ok bumping this up, nowhere near to finished w/ the game, but here goes...

1. i love being able to zoom in & out - fights look good & looking for that whatever i dropped is much easier than in the bg games. also being able to look around is neat. (can't recall how many times i'd have to scan the screen to find a key that was dropped "behind" a wall in bg (before the tab highlight of course)

2. the forge tells you what you need before you need it. if cespenar had only been so coperative. at first i missed out on some upgrades since the game does not promt for them like in bg2 / tob, but i never had to enter through the whole line of responses either. (yay!) lets face it as funny as cespenar was the first time, after you played the game a few times you really hated him.

3a. fighters can do more than hit stuff. and i love being able to switch quickly from sword & shield to longbow.

3b. hot keys. so very cool.

4. so far it seems as if the game is much more flexible as to weapon / class choices. major rewards are keyed to your char so you don't pick up a lot of useless stuff. (well not really, i still pick up useless stuff...)

5. the animations, i *love* the look of torches, the way shadows are cast around your char, and the animation for the desert wind scimitar is pretty cool.

6. i sort of like the 3rd edition rules, i've never played or read them for the pen & paper but they seem more focused on creating the kind of char you want, rather than just re-roll till you win. it forces you to make some tough choices.

I love the user created modules - This game has been out for a very short time and there are already hundreds of decent user created modules to play - some are good, some bad, and a few are excellent.

I am an old time D&D guy - and there are already some fairly well done conversions of classic PnP modules like G1 and G2 Against the Giants, and Ravenloft. This is too cool - to be able to play these modules again after 20 + years is great - and best of all they are free :) .

Last night I got my two old D&D buddies together on my lan and we played through a couple of modules - we finally stopped at 2:30 in the morning :o This is roleplaying - Baldurs Gate did a great job of attempting to duplicate the player interactions of Pnp with the excellent NPC scripts - but lets face it - D&D was meant to be played with other folks - scripting and AI has come a long way - but roleplaying is much more fun with other carbon based life forms :D

Another thing I like are the character leveler modules - you can create characters with any combination of gear, experience, and stats and try many different combinations.

The multiplayer element of this game has a ton of potential and is a blast to play. It seems many people are IMHO overly concerned with the prepackaged single player campaign. No it isn't Baldurs gate - but why let that bother you? This game was built for multiplayer fun and if the quality and quantity of user created modules continues to increase it will provide almost limitless fun and replayability.

My 2 cents ;)

I like the game a lot. I bought PS:Torment but haven't opened the box as NWN came the same day. I have done BG2, POR and Wiz8, and spent a couple years addicted to EverQuest.

I love the avatars and the emotes/gestures.

Gotta' love the zoom-in-for-the-big-fight ability.

My characters voice. When she calls out that she won't let you do that or "I didn't want to do this..." It sends a shiver down my spine - and I'm almost done with chapter two.

Love the feel of some places - Neverwinter Woods, Luskan Sewers. Shadows, lighting, colors all very nice. (Some of the places are just okay.)

My hubby says Aribeth is nice, and I think Aaron is pretty hunky, even if (as I hear) it stays pretty platonic...

I am looking forward to doing others' mods after I finish the SP mod.

I dunno', it's a fun game. I guess it could be better, but, hey, what couldn't be better? I think the expectation level of the computer role-playing crowd was unreasonably high (which was partially BioWare's fault). It's not the second coming... maybe not even the second coming of BG2. But it sure beats watching TV!

@kibblez - you will love planescape - IMHO the best story of all the infinity engine games. I played it a year ago - and even then it was 2+ years old - maybe the best solo rpg ever for the computer. :)

I was quite disappointed after chapter 1, the tory seemed too linear and too simple. When I entered chapter 2 I just started running around and slaughtering everything for the first few hours because I didn't expect things to get better.

To my surprise, the game got much better in chapter 2, better quests, better atmosphere, many complex side quests and I really started to like it.

What I like about NWN is the flexibility in character design, I can try all those things I ever wanted to try and there are endless possibilities for different characters. Unlike BG2 all abilities and ability scores have an impact on the game.

Concerning details I especially like that NPCs look at you and turn their heads if you move out of their sight, that enemies follow through doors most times and that the effects of hiding / sneaking actions are quite realistic in the game.
