Known bugs

Post by C Elegans »

@Xandax and everybody: Since the game unfortunately contains some strange bugs and problems, I think we should have a thread where we try to collect as many knows issues as possible, just to avoid that people spend hours fighting a problem there is a known solution to - or no solution at all.

Ranger/Druid class quest (Zoo quest, other classes can take this quest by persuading):

SPOILER, highlight to read:

Problem: quest does not appear in journal when finished, and speaking to Nyatar only results in him repeating the quest. You get no XP.

Solution: It seems like you must use "talk" to the animals and instruct them to run to the tree, then use talk again to instruct them to run through the portal. You cannot use animal charm to get them to follow you to the tree, the quest will break then for some reason even if you use talk to get them to run into the portal. Sometimes this quest doesn't work even if you do it correctly, and to this, there is no solution AFAIK apart from waiting for the next patch.

Spoiler re CE's post:

I am playing a druid. It did not occur to me to do anything other than to actually talk to the animals. *shrugs* It was the first thing I did, I did not try charm animal. @CE - when you completed the quest, did you check that the journal entries had actually moved from the current quests page to the completed quests page? :)

Doubt it is a bug.

You get the "amulet-thingy" to be able to talk to the animals - thus you must talk to the animals.

But - post bugs here as CE suggested (good initiative, hadn't thought of it myself :) ).

Spoiler regarding Zoo quest, @Ysh & Xan:

I am a ranger, so I used the natural skill I have - maybe it's not called charm animal, rather Animal handling or something similar. Seemed natural since I got the instruction "talk the animals like I know you can do", ie I thought it was a reference to my inert skill since he didn't mention "use this amulet" to talk to the animals. It seemed sort of strange that the ranger's own skill made the quest break.

Linu, the henchman:

Every time I enter a new area, she gets stuck at the entrance and does not move. The only way to move her is to teleport back to the temple and try again. In most indoor areas in Blacklake district, she freezed totally and could not be used at all. Very strange.

I got stuck halfway in a wall (?) in the training academy. I got loose when I finally saved and reloaded the save game.

In another thread we are covering the possibility of Bioware having mixed up the prerequisites for Improved Disarm with Improved Knockdown. For some odd reason, a 13 in intelligence is required to take the Improved Knockdown feat when the only prerequisites listed in the manual are having already selected the knockdown feat and a base attack bonus of +7.

My Barbarian loses the attack bonus

If save my Barbarian during a rage and I reload the game later, then he loses the level based attack bonus.
So I drop from 20 to 10 or so.
It can not be solved by save and reload.
They only thing that helps is a level up.

They also mixed up the saves for Phantasmal Killer. Now you've gotta take a will save or die and a fortitude save or take damage, normally it's will save then fortitude save and die, if you make the save then you get damage. Now it's the best spell in the game :D

Spells that come and go

I am playing a ranger, and I have noticed that when I reload a saved game where I have cast my animal companion and lost him, I get the casting possibility back without having rested. I first noticed this when I was killed by a trap just after a fight where my Spider had died - reload, and suddely the summoning button was not greyed out anymore.

After a little research it turned out that this is very common for all summoning skills, and I've heard that some spells may come back this way too. Sometimes it seems to occur even without reloading, low level spells come and go randomely.

The werewolf quest in chapter 2

Problems with the werewolf quest in chapter 2 is common. It seems patch 1.21 6278 fixes this problem, if you are brave enough to install it.

Quest spoiler describing the bug, highlight to read:

This most commonly happens with Geth, the guy at the East road, but I have seen reports it sometimes can happen with the other 2 guys as well. When you have wounded Geth and talk to him, you can give him the Silver charm but you will get the error message "Script m2q1a01gethring, OID: 800244f; Tag M2Q1CURTH, ERROR: TOO MANY INSTRUCTIONS" (or urthring/branring, depending on who you are talking to). If you continue the conversation, you can give him all the charms you have, but nothing happens, he stays a werevolf, and the game will most likely freeze. You do not get his ring or journal update and the quest cannot be completed unless you kill him. In some versions, you will get the ring, but the guy stays werewolf anyway.

Yet another common bug

Chapter 1, the Intellectual devourer spawning incorrectly:

Spoiler, highlight to read

Many people have problems with the Intellectual devourer, sometimes it is not there even if you kill all the guards, sometimes he is there initially but disappears - the possibilities seem endless, but the result is that you can't complete the quest since you can't get the brain. This is the only solution I know of, taken from the official forum:
First, go to the PRISON! It HAS to be in the prison if you don't want to kill everyone in sight. Then type ~. This brings up the console. Type dm_spawncreature M1Q2_DEVOUR exactly as typed. The devourer will spawn, attack you once, and will then become neutral. How do you kill him, you might ask? This is another console code- dm_cowsfromhell. Several cows will appear from a gateway to the 9 hells and destroy the intellect devourer... and everyone else alive. NOTE- it takes MULTIPLE tries 'cuz the devourer has an assload of HP... 4, to be specific. He will then DIE, and the brain spawns on the ground. I hope this is helpful to everyo looking to complete NWN.

You can also just attack him when he is neutral, thus avoiding to use the cows from hell, since they will kill everything except you. If you use cows from hell to kill the devourer, you may want to leave your henchman and potial animal companions in another since they will get killed too by the cows.

I've got two bugs to report...

The Bard Song count is reset to full after a load. If I use the song several times, the count of available uses drops by one each time, but if I then save and reload the game, I again have full use.

Number two: some items have to be repeatedly identified. I have found a lot of Arrows of the Vampire, but each time I find them, they are unidentified. Same with the sling ammo that's golden - I forget the exact name "Ferro's Gold"??

Thanks for posting that, helped me lots.

I don't know if this is a bug feel free to delete if it is answered somewhere else, but my journal seems to lose entries, i only have the last three or four at any one time.
I'd have to get drunk every night and talk about virility...And those Pink elephants I'd see.

Not actually a bug, but a mistake between the manual and the game.

According to the manual a bastard sword is a martial weapon, but according to the game it is an exotic weapon.

ANother bug is the forging of "Leather" armor in chapter 1. You can give him leather armor, but you will get back a breastplate +1 which is a heavy armor and useless to those who want light armor.

I have two bugs to report:

I think this has been mentioned elsewhere, but I am unable to use all my mage spells, even after resting about half will be greyed out.

Also, sometimes after going into Luskan the game can become unstable. The first time I saved and quit after entering the place, I received a blue screen, and upon firing up the game again, the load button would not work..... I had to reinstall the game and load in a game save just before Luskan, and then it worked fine. More recently, after quitting my game was deleted...fortunately I had a recent autosave...but I have taken to using a back up save in quick save.

While this is very annoying that doesnt mean its a bug. Its very likely this is exactly what its supposed to be. It never states anywhere that when you give him magic leather armor that you will necessarily get magic leather armor back.
