Doom... no arguing!
Warcraft, Starcraft, and Diablo series.
Half-Life, Counter-Strike.
Quake I and II.
Command & Conquer series - but not Tiberian Sun or Red Alert II.
Sim City 2000 and The Sims.
Wing Commander.
...Baldur's Gate II certainly has a place but not at the top.

Ultlima is undeniably good, but it's for people with no lives at all... very unhealthy leading another life on a computer 24/7, no?

Older games--
Legend of Zelda.
Street Fighter II.
Lemmings.
Tetris.

Starcraft!!! Arguably the MOST BALANCED GAME EVER. Ever since I got it, I never stopped playing it. PS:T is runner-up.

Nothing beats Thief 2 (that I've played) in terms of sheer atmosphere.

Though Worms 2 has to come in somewhere near the top too, just because it's so mindlessly fun seeing how high you can get a Super sheep and still get it to hit the ground before it explodes, and then watch it in slo-mo with it's little legs wiggling in sheer panic. :D

On consoles, I'd have to go for Secret of Mana, or Street Fighter 2 Turbo.

BG2 + ToB + various mods + Ascension

You can't find those kind of battles in another game,
especially Ascension...incredibly fun

Starcraft second (I'd say Torment but it's not much replayble)

War craft and starcraft.
They are essentially the same.

Ahhh...of c ourse I forgot Red Alert  . It's a classic, much better than any RTS I've played since...I still haven't got the hang of Heavy Tanks though :D .

LOL :D . I love a decisive man... :)

But Diablo, The Sims and Street Fighter II have absolutely no place even mentioned anywhere near the best game ever  :D

Anyway Street Fighter EX Plus Alpha is the best street fighter (possibly the best beat em up)...

@Ode, ahh, Worms...Happy memories. Creating a team of historical poets and philosophers, prominent homosexuals through history and renaissance artists, and have them kill each other with exploding sheep :) . I rate Worms Armageddon higher though, just because I like the new graphics style, and Super Sheep is so goddamned genius :) .

I'm a bit of an SF2 purist, but I liked playing as the bosses sometimes, so Turbo was my fave. No air-blocking, no super-moves, just plain simple fighting where it was just skill on skill.

I never got to play Armageddon, but who couldn't love a game with exploding grannies, cluster-bananas, and super sheep, not to mention explosive Ming vases? :D

BG2 (SoA) is the best IMO, followed by BG1 (opened up a new world to me), PS:T (best storyline ever), Heroes of Might and Magic (fantasy and strategy in the perfect combination), The Longest Journey (a masterpiece) and Ocarina of Time on N64 (the music, the story... simply beautiful).

Ocarina of Time, that was a masterpiece alright. Pity Majora's Mask was never quite up to the same standard... :(

Ocarina of Time is the only game that justified buying my N64, IMO.

I could ride around on Epona and fish in that pond for hours... Those were the days.

I also liked Goldeneye and Banjo Kazooie a lot. Not to mention Wipeout - the control you had over your ship is unbeaten even to this day.

My fave trick towards the end of my Zelda 64 days was back-flipping from an enemy and drawing my sword in the air  (I always used the Master Sword and the Hylian Shield) and then, upon landing, doing a leaping attack, usually killing an enemy in one blow. It took hours of practice to get it right though.

And then there was my other favourite, calling Epona and when she was coming to my character, moving so she'd run over an enemy in getting to me.
Also the fairies were done very well IMO, especially the trail they left as they moved...
I've got a SNES now, but I used to go back to OoT evry now and then, just to revisit some of the memories from playing it. *sigh*
I played Goldeneye to death, is the trouble. Perfect Dark was fun though.

Thats like saying StarCraft is the same as Red Alert. Both games are quite different. The Warcraft series (up until Beyond the Dark Portal) was started the initial RTS craze in North America (Many would say C&C, but what do they know). Blizzard made WC2 too balanced though, and thats why it wasn't played for very long times. The stiory though, was far supierior to any RTS on the market at the time.

StarCraft, though. this game was genius. By far the best game for the PC, period. Never has an RTS developer come close to balancing the races as well as Blizzard did. On top of that, they added one of the best stories in a PC game, to date. A testament of this, is the fact that there is still, on average, about 400 000 people on B.net, daily.

Panzer General.

Wasted more hours of my life on that than anything else (except self abuse). Far better than the predicatable choices here. :D

Civ1, 2 and 3 are tied for 2nd place.

The Civ and the Simcity series (played those games for ages)
Same goes for Doom.
I also realy enjoy Age of Wonders at the moment.
Myst was fun to, but isn't good to replay a second time
But the BG series also comes in mind.

But my vote goes to DuneII I played that game for ages untill C&C came out.
Now i'm off the RTS games, I rather play relaxed than quick
I do not have the touch, nor do I have the power.

Hmmm...I have played tons of PC games (and a few console games), and to be honest I cannot remember them all.

However, these come to mind:

1. BG series - my all-time favorite.
2. Jedi Knight 2 - Hee hee! Force grip! :D
3. MechCommander 2 - I really enjoyed that one.
4. The Warcraft games - I haven't played 3 yet, but when I do, oh boy!
5. Ultima I-III - Yeah, a long time ago, but I still like 'em.

Console -

The #1 game I played for hours on end, mastering each character, was Street Fighter II and later Turbo. :D (Hey Maharlika, I loved that game!)

A class apart - NWN. I'm working on building for this one. :)

I can't choose one standout. So let me offer 5 possibilites:

1) BG2
2) PS:T
3) Betrayal at Krondor
4) King of Dragon Pass
5) Master of Magic
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.
