how does it compare with BG?

Post by MordorMan »

Hello actors!

Well, tomorrow I will be able to call myself the owner of a box of Morrowind. But will I be a proud owner? That question has been nagging me since I decided to mail-order it.

I was thoroughly delighted by the BG series, but it has caused my expectations of RPG's to be somewhat high. Some time ago, I bought Dungeon Siege after I read some praising evaluations of the game. But what a let down its was! It was so boring, it plays like 'gauntlet' without the funny aspects. Allright, the graphics were great, but does that matter very much in a RPG, I ask you? I don't need polygons to have a good time. Rather give me a good storyline, balanced development and exciting NPC interactions. Dungeon Siege was a waste of my money and, more important, my time.

So my question to the BG veterans is: do you think morrowind is a game worthy of playing after BG?

I love bg2, after beating ti twice i bought nwn and was sorely dissapointed after 3 days, and pissed off at the waste of 60 bucks. I went to morrowind next, and I love it. Its not as good as bg2 IMO, but its damn close. I'd reccomend it (and have) to anyone

Morrowind has to be one of my favorite games.......however, I think BG beats Morrowind in almost every aspect. Dont get me wrong, I think it was wise of you to buy the game, and I assure you that you havent wasted your money. However BG II wins in a lot of aspects.
-I think BG is better with the fact that you are a party rather than just 1 person
-I like the plot to both games, though I like the plot better for BGII
-I like gameplay for BG II better
-I like NPC's and there were no NPC's that could join you in Morrowind except for people you escort.
-Graphically Morrowind is better, but I think its because its newer.
-Items Hmmmmm.....I think BGII is better because of its expansion with Cespenar, but Morrowind has some really nice items
-World layout-no question-Morrowind dominates here. The world is so vast, if you try to play just to map out or be everywhere, well that will take long time.
-I think Baldurs Gate had a better lasting appeal, though Morrowind has a great lasting appeal.
-Overall BG II wins

But thats my analysis. I think both games are worth the money and more. Both are well done and great buys. If I think of more things to compare-I will add to my list. :)

Morrowind is a great game with an open feel I hadn't seen since BG1. The only thing I really miss is playing with a party and NPC interactions. Otherwise, it's a great game to lose yourself in.
There's nothing a little poison couldn't cure...

What happened here was the gradual habituation of the people, ... to receiving decisions deliberated in secret; to believing that the situation was so complicated that the government had to act on information which the people could not understand, or so dangerous that, even if he people could understand it, it could not be released because of national security.

Well, I thank you for your reactions. I am looking forward to playing Morrowind now with more anticipation. And I am strengthened in my decision not to play NWN.

I already knew that you play Morrowind solo, not in a group with NPC's. I hope someday a RPG will come out like Morrowind but with the possibility of grouping with NPC's. I think that was one of the aspects that made BG good. Not just the funny dialogs (between you and the NPC and the NPC's among each other) but also the uncertainties towards the loyalties of your companions really added to the atmosphere. Also, combat is more interesting when playing with NPC's. Some of the tougher opponents in BG really needed a coordinated team effort to beat ("There appears to be a Greater Firedemon in the next room. All right, me and Minsc an Boo will distract it with a frontal assault while Edwin here turns invisible and sneaks in and blasts it with a frost ray. Jaheira will cojure up some animals to cover our retreat, should the need arise. And Imoen, please stand in the corner here so that you don't get in the way...") And it helps if you can balance your team during the game to complement each other.

But I am looking forward to playing in a large continuous seamless world. That should really be an improvement. Especially later on in the BG series, the playing areas where too few and therefore unrealistically packed with places of special interest.

The one thing that puts a lot of people off Morrowind to begin with is the lack of direction, there is just so much expanse that the game goes on for as long as you want it to. I have been playing the same campaign for over a month now, i can't recall another game with such a huge amount to do, it doesn't get stale either.

Okay one can get bored with all the traipsing around and poor directions but that is part of the game, i personally prefer BG1 as well, the freedom and the many other feelings that game evoked are very special, only Planescape has a more entrancing plot.

OK, I loved both the BG games. The interactions and the story are fantastic. Lots of cool items, characters, weapons. The graphics, in my opinion, were solid. The fighting was. . .uh. . .not so great. It was less like playing and much more like watching. Click on the monsters and wait. I understand that the battles isnt all there is, but its a pritty big part of the game. Too big of a part for me to just watch.
Morrowind offers what I've been hoping for in an RPG, complete control of your character's actions. Although chop-slash-thrust can get a little redundant, I think Morrowind is a huge step forward in RPGs.
I think the ideal RPG would be to combine the interaction of BG, the open-endedness of Morrowind, and the combat of Jedi Knight II.
Seen any elves lately. . .
Ha Ha Ha Ha . . . . . . .???

Good point, that would be fantastic.

On the subject of combat i am inclined to agree, when playing as a fighter it gets increasingly boring. Playing as a mage can make things a little more interesting but even then Cliff Racers still bug me...although i take them out from miles away now with lightning storm

There is also the added element of soul trap which can alter how one fights an enemy.
