It's just a little story about some of the local people. I think you're supposed to be surprised when you learn the truth about the couple. When you first hear about them, you might think that they're just a couple of innocent kids whose parents are trying to keep them apart. If you talk to them upstairs, you find out that they've been on a crime spree together, and THAT's why their parents want to keep them apart. The drunk downstairs might mention that he lost his farm when his barn burned down. If you talk to the couple, you find out that they were the ones who set the barn on fire. You can encourage them to stay together; if you do that, the crime spree will continue. I guess it's supposed to teach you a lesson for meddling in other people's affairs. Otherwise, they will decide to break up and you can watch them say goodbye to each other.

My POV: I think it's a satire of the Ultima VII "love boat" quests (as they were called back then), when you were supposed to bring together ill-starred couples, and gain experience for it. In this case, the couple are rather ordinary and unpleasant, and giving them any solution at all wins you absolutely nothing.

Icewind Gate II Improved engine, third edition rules and the full BG2 storyline.
If you ever fall off the Sears Tower, just go real limp, because maybe you'll look like a dummy and people will try to catch you because, hey, free dummy.
Love is a perky elf dancing a merry little jig and then suddenly he turns on you with a miniature machine gun.

In my humble opinion, this Romeo & Juliette story wasn't funny for me. I would rather say I found it indifferent, at least. No comparison whatsoever with the gnome in Government District
Anyway, thanks for all the replies.
Cheers
P.S. I had thought of killing them both, too, but I didn't. I suppose it was their manner I had found a bit annoying.

That's because it's a tongue-in-cheek satire (again, as I see it), rather than simply straight-forward humor. Both BIS and Bioware have done satire before--the most notable being the Modron Maze in PS:T, which is a satire on all those Dungeon Hack style games, complete with repetitive monsters, squared, empty rooms, and "goodies" on the ground.
