Multi Classing, or not.

Post by Madcap »

Just became a member, and am early awaiting IWD2. Icebound is a godsend! A quick question I have is this:

Is anyone else considering NOT using the 3rd edition multi-classing rules? Just having a Paladin, Sorceror, Rogue, etc. without all of the cross classing?

I seems kind of neat for making a specific character that you want, but overall I think I may just stick with the old way of doing things, at least for my first time through the game.

Anyone care to comment. Perhaps I am missing something.

I strongly doubt that my wizard will multiclass. My bard will, but only later in the game, and my cleric will, but much, much later.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

I always play as pure Paladin the first time through a new game and this is what i'll do with IWD2. I'll begin experimenting later between the classes and multiclass characters. :)

I do the same. Gotta love the paladin! I usually take a classic party - Paladin, Fighter, Barbarian/Ranger, Cleric, Thief, Wizard/Sorceror. Although I am thinking paladin, fighter, cleric, thief, wizard and sorceror for my first group. Have to see. I usually create 10-15 different parties before I find one I like the balance of. Lets just say I can get through Irenicus' Prison in BG2 very quickly!

Yes i prefer paladin too, and now with the 3e D&D the paladin class is more balanced(not overpowered) and the skills more appropriate for the way of the paladin.

I will multi some of my party (if I have them) such as :

Rogues : only use them for finding/disarming traps so when proficient here I will add some wizard or fighter levels

Druids : more useful IMO when multi'd with fighter

Rangers : only useful taking a level of ranger (may multi with rogue above)

The following members of my party (should I have them) will NOT be mutli'd ever

Paladin
Wizard / Sorcerer
Fighter
Vol'cane Iphil'kur

Elven Princess

10 Fighter / 5 illusionist

If you pick your classes/races right a one level multi-class to fighter can do wonders. e.g. At second level I added fighter to my wild elf sorcerer, got all the feats/weapon proficiencies for a fighter and a healthy number of hit points. It's a good boost for a low level character, and so long as one class is favored there are no penalties.

What about Monks? I'd never multi a Monk either, they're awsome at high levels and a waste if you can't get them there because you multi'd him/her.

In my current game I gave my Paladin, Barbarian, and Battleguard of Tempus a level or two of fighter at the beginning in order to get the extra feat which I think is pretty useful. And after getting my Fighter/Barbarian to level 2 and 9 respectivly I began to level up as a fighter again in an effort to get weapon specialization at level 4. I used a potion that gave a perminant damage reduction in a few types of damage classes to make up for the fact that I probably won't be able to get him to level 11 Barbarian on normal difficulty. That of course gives Barbarians a natural damage reduction of 1 in ALL damage types, but agree or disagree, I thought it was worth the sacrifice to get that extra damage point.
