Exactly, and this is IMO unfortunate in all societies, but also understandable and part of how human socialising works.

I don't agree that it's easy to be banned from Gamebanshee, not even as a new member - not if you have read the forum rules first anyway. I have seen many occations when a new member is warned for having violated forum rules. I do however agree with your notion that older member sometimes receive "the benefit of doubt" to a higher degree than a newcomer. This is IMO unfortunate, but very difficult to change, here, on other boards or IRL. I do however personally feel that the Moderators and Buck are more fair and objective in their assessments than the SYM population as a whole.

Yes, saying its easy was perhaps an overstatment, but my point was that looking at old members it might seem that the rules arent that important.

And this was definatly not meant as critic against the mods, buck or anyone else for that matter, it was merly an observation.

I didn't take it as critisism of Buck & the Mods (that really sounds like a 60's popband), I think it is an interesting observation although I don't share it. Can you without going into names and details, give examples of what type of posts or general behaviours you have noticed are more tolerated from older members than new ones?

You ought to check out a MUCK or MUD, @CE, just to see how well human interaction in artificial, virtual environments mirrors real life. It's uncanny that way. And this is one of the less pleasant aspects it mimics. I've watched newcomers in some of these games politely ask for information, only to be completely ignored by all present.

Our air conditioner automatically turns on even at 2 in the morning: that's how hot it is. Many days have respiratory alerts, when the heat index rises above 100 F. Humidity, too, has been relatively high. The entire state is in an emergency water condition--not for human consumption, but in so far as watering lawns, cars, etc, are concerned. Of course, there are always people who seem to think that these sort of regulations aren't meant to affect their rugged individuality, and they ignore 'em. The US is bad that way. Freedom apparently involves getting a lobotomy early in life that removes all trace of the responsibility nodule from the brain.

How come you are interested in why previous members got banned? I have to admit I've never thought much about it, perhaps because I know what types of behaviours that will inevitably lead to banning.

Why do I take interest in banning? Im not terribly sure. I always wonder what could have been, and contravercial things are things I like to look at, aslong as Im not the one being contravercial. So when I say, what might have been, I wonder how I would have interacted with people like Sailor Saturn, Darkpoet, etc. And the fact thats theres no chance for me to meet them here at the forum makes me more curious on what might have been.

Upon my arrival to SYM, I felt a bit of pressure to fit in with you guys, and I wanted to be charismatic enough to get noticed. (Im still trying to get noticed sometimes) But I also was nervous about the rules, and exactly how strict they are. Well Ive been here a month, and Im still here and having a great time. No one has really been offended (Or I hope not ) so I will keep on doing what Im doing and hopefully get to know many more people here a bit more. Thats important to me. People I know, but never really talk to are those I want to know more, like Minerva, Beldin, Dragon Wench, Vehemence, Osiris, and today Brink was here.

Ill mention names anyway, as the member im thinking about did bring up this point himself a while ago. If you dont remember Aragorn returns did get banned for posting a thread with a large amount of curses in. I think it may have been an atempt of humor, but it wasnt that funny imo, and other members didnt seem to think that either.

Before this event HLD had posted a similar thread wich was humorous, and he had cencored out all curses himself rather than letting them be cought by the language filter. I dont remeber peoples reaction to it, but iirc he didnt get a warning or comments from it (and didnt deserve it either imo). But the problem is that the difference between the two threads might not have been apearent for AR.

Not sure what state you live in fable, but its the same situation here in MA. Up to 97degrees yesterday. Today we had relief as it only got to 95degrees. A water restriction/ban is in effect, and the humidity is awful.

I missed both of these events, @Dottie. I never saw @HLD's thread, and Aragorn was gone when I got back from some event or other. Maybe HLD's got overlooked by the other mods, and by Buck. Or maybe the spirit was different. Typically, Aragorn (whom I rather liked) was always pushing against anybody he perceived as pushing him, and that included all rules. HLD might have just been having fun, or making a point.

AR's post was a curse filled rant about something ot other (I think it was about his wanting to go kill people or something. It may have been an attempt at humor but it wasn't funny nor was it apppropriate) . This was after he'd been asked not to post that sort of thing and to keep the swearing down.

I hope you dont think im critisizing any of the mods here. I think it was a difference between the two, and I was slightly offended by ARs, but not at all by HLDs. Still the difference might not have been that clear to AR.

It's always difficult to figure out just how much grey area there is with the rules when you first arrive. That's why I think it's a good idea to sit quietly for a while, observe, post a bit, and Get Seen. Goddess knows, I didn't do that. I threw in a joking political reference up in one of the BG threads shortly after I arrived. Weasel called me on it in a rather stiff fashion, and that got my goat. I replied, and it started turning into a fracas. We got it sorted out via PMs, after I realized that this rule was taken very seriously, and that Weasel hadn't meant to come across like a paladin. In retrospect, I should have followed the advice I offer, above.

That was later. AR has apparently decided to keep returning with new names. I think he took banning as a challenge. Personally, I wish him will. The guy had spunk and brains, if he could just remove that chip on his shoulder.

I have never looked at a MUD, if it weren't for my hubby I wouldn't even know what it is. I do however believe that internet socialisation is not so different from RL, the only exception being the sense of anonymity increasing disinhibition of impulses.

So, it is abnormally hot in NJ too? Maybe we should start bringing icebergs from Greenland here to cool things off a bit...I have often talked about NZ as one of the best countries in the world socially and humanitarian-wise, they also have the most ecologically aware population in the world IMO. When there were water restriction is Auckland, not a single person I met consumed so much as an excessive drop.

@Tyb: Interesting...so it's a fascination in alternative chain of events that lead you to take interest in banned people. I can see the connection. Must be the same thing with members who have left the board, like Vehemence, a very funny and smart guy from Australia. He studied psychology, btw.

You are extremly polite and nice, so if somebody has been offended by you it must be a mistake! I hope you feel relaxed enought not to think about fitting in any longer - and never fear to voice your opinions, as long as you do it in a way that is not insulting to others.

@Dottowsky: I must be totally brain dead today...I don't remember any on the events you referr to, but I understand your point. If might be difficult for new member and for AR himself to see the difference, but if you know HLD:s normal posting style it must have been very obvious he was joking.

This was news for me. I never imagined you to enter that way fable.

I dont think it would have been impossible for me to get banned at the begining. I did start to check out SYM around the 9/11 event and had rather extreme opinions on the matter according to some standards. I think it would've been rather easy for me to step out of line more than i should if things have been abit different.

This makes it an excellent candidate for research; and I've read some truly boring theses published up on the Web about social interactions in MUDs. The larger the game, the more natural the resulting social environment, it would appear.

This also seems true of much of Western and Northern Europe, from what I've heard. I think the culture of plenty in the US has kept people here from realizing just how fragile natural resources are.
