Umar Chickens
Umar Chickens
My cousin's over and he was telling me about a quest in the Umar Hills with the chickens. I didn't believe him but sure enough we went and killed the chickens and in one we found the Beljuril, that jewel guarded by the Adamite Golem in Windspear. Is there a quest around this and if so who do you talk to to get it.
Since you've already killed the chicken, it may no longer be possible to do the quest - Highlight for spoiler:
There's a peasant standing near the river crossing north of the inn. If you're polite to him, he'll tell you about seeing a farmer hiding something in a chicken. You can then talk to the farmer standing next to the chickens about it. It's actually possible to pickpocket the chicken for the beljuril.

There's nothing a little poison couldn't cure...
What happened here was the gradual habituation of the people, ... to receiving decisions deliberated in secret; to believing that the situation was so complicated that the government had to act on information which the people could not understand, or so dangerous that, even if he people could understand it, it could not be released because of national security.

If the farmer has'n turned hostile (for you killing the chickens) maybe you can still do the quest and get another beljuril.
Such things sometimes happen in the game.
(In fact, if you pickpocket the chicken and then speak to the farmer, you get a second beljuril...)
Anyway, can someone please tell me how do you write black text (to hide spoilers)?
The color "black" is not in the menu when I write replies!
Thanks if someone can help.
@Malakian: I can also suggest an interesting use for the beljuril if you want more spoilers!
(I'd like to write it "invisible"... hope someone teaches me how to do it...)

Where we came from, we don't know
Where we're going.... (even worse)
And about who we could be, we actually have trouble in clearly defining the term "to be" in the first place...

Oh thanks!
It works!
@uncle: well, talking about upgrading that item, if we consider that we have to:
1) Find it, and it's not that easy if you have no clue about where to look in the first place!
2) Discover you can upgrade it
3) Upgrade it the first time
4) Go to the Umar Hills and do the "chicken quest"
5) Come back and upgrade it again!
I'd say we could call all this a quest after all, why not?
If it isn't, it should have been... The (spoiler) Horn of Valhalla Quest...
I mean, I find it very odd that ther are no clues and/or journal entries that indicate/remind you to do all these things!

Should this bard write the whole Horn of Valhalla Quest here for you?
Just ask!

Ok, here you go... (highlight)
The story of the Horns of Valhalla
Long time ago, inside Waukeen's promenade, our hero (I mean you) found a fat mercant selling weapons.
If asked about it, the merchant would reveal that he knew how to craft special horns.
And... Here the story ends.
...I mean, here the story would end if our hero had not the habit to break into unknown, unmarked, trapped houses and loot everything in there for absolutely no plot or quest-related reason.
I guess game designers thought that AD&D heroes are supposed to do just that (I think so because if we don't do that, we would never find the twisted rune and the staff of the magi as well... read my signature)
So our hero eventually went to a house in the bridge district near a fish merchant, broke in, detrapped all, and amongst the other treasures found a magical horn: the Silver Horn of Valhalla.
The horn was capable of summoning a 5th level berserker from Valhalla, one time a day.
Our hero then decided to ask the aforementioned merchant (Maheer was his name) what he tought about the horn, and found out it could be rendered more powerful adding a diamond to it.
So he found a diamond (where, this bard can't remember anymore... sorry... there are many around the realms!), brought it to Maheer, and got the Horn transformed in the Bronze Horn of Valhalla, capable to summon a 7th level berserker.
The rest is already known...
Repeated the process using a Beljuril, and obtained the even more powerful Iron Horn of Valhalla (capable of summoning a 9th level berserker).
Only one problem... Finding a Beljuril was far more difficult than finding a diamond!
Nobody knew where to find one in the Realms!!!! Alas...
Ah, no. Wait. We already know it.... it was at the beginning of that thread
Hope you enjoyed the story

Mahary...
...anyways, my SYMian friends normally call me Mar or Mah for short.
Possible "Spoiler":
I played BG2 SoA and ToB countless times and I have read through a number of walkthroughs but I could not remember the use of the gem in question. I do remember the Horn of Valhalla and I was really wondering why such an item is only guarded by a trap. It would have been more appropriate and interesting if one can procure it by having to defeat a party (like the one somewhere in a house at the Bridge District whose mage summons a demon) who actually would make use of the item against you.
BTW, I forgot to greet you a belated Happy Birthday last Saturday. Mine was Sunday, the 18th.
@Le Blade: Thanks for the rendering of your bardsong. I just can hear the lute playing.

@Mahary: Sounds like you might want to find a good walkthru of the game to find out what you've been missing. If you've already played the game thru a few times I would highly recommend doing this because there are quiet a few plot twist and hidden nuggets in the game that are easily overlooked.

No apologies needed...
I never knew what most of the trap effects are since almost always I have my thief scour the place for traps. It's a long process since you have to hide in shadows then search for trap. (But sometimes I use two members, one for scouting followed closely by a thief detecting for traps.)
Yeah, I wished that there would be more of those magic artifacts that can only be gotten when you kill the monsters who are ACTUALLY using those same artifacts against you.
Cheers!
...I figured that there are just some things worth discovering by yourself... however, curiosity is killing me like the proverbial cat when you guys started making me aware of it, hence the query about the gem.Originally posted by UncleScratchy
Sorry Mah, no way for me to know how many times you've played. Thanks for the birthday greeting, I don't find birthdays pleasant anymore - just grim reminders. Still I appreciate the thought. Happy BDay to you as well. Anyway, the trap guarding the horn is a nasty one, kills you instantly if you try to bash it. Good job for Yoshi - if he botches it there's no loss. But your point is well taken. The whole Valhala horn thing could have been done much better. For example, with the silver blade you had Githyanki chasing you across all of Faerun for it.

@ Mah, Uncle: thanks you very much for the appreciation, you are most nice and audience! (bows)
And then... happy birthday everyone... hey, saturday was my birthday too! How odd!
(I guess Mah greetings were aimed at Uncle, anyway?)
Away with sadness! Let's celebrate!!!
(starts playing a happy tune and dancing)
...back on topic...
Well, the Horn (any version) was not such powerful an item to really justify demons watching it imo... maybe some berserkers could have been more in theme than chickens, yet
About looking for traps while hiding in shadow, it's really an annoyance that it couldn't be done... I resorted to turning Imoen invisible when scouting/detecting (thus saving skill points for other things) ages ago! Namely, from the times of BG1...
And then, I found the staff of the magi... (damn twisted rune, hiding from me for years, you cowards!!!)
I guess that the real purpose for which that staff was created is to allow Jan/Imoen to look for traps while invisible?
And about enemies using the items they possess... Think about Kangaxx! He's not only not using his ring... I just can't figure out what good would do to him using it! Haste? Protection from poison, disesase?? For a lich??
