Chest Thumping....
Chest Thumping....
Does bashing open chests and boxes incur a small chance of destroying some of the items that are in the chest? I've remember hearing that it did. Yet, everyone is saying how unnecessary Tomi is if you can just have a trap disarmer. Does that mean those who don't use Tomi just bash open everything?

I don't know. If you look at the scripts put on the chest, usually the on_death event and the on_use event are the same, which means what you kill gets you the same thing. But I don't know how the inventory thing works, since when I put something in a Monster's inventory and kill it, the item doesn't drop... Don't know if the chest thing work the same way...
You know, I just played through Chap 1 with a Fighter and no Tomi/henchman. I don't know how people go through the game with no lockpicker and still open all chests.
Some of the chest are incredibly damage resistant. One chest I bumped into was at least a +2 Soak 40! Unless you restarted with a high level character it's almost impossible to bash open a chest like that even with high strength. The only thing that damaged it was a critical from a Great Axe at level 7 (which is pretty decent for chapter 1). It did 42 damage, 40 of which was soaked... It would've taken me at LEAST an hour to bash that sucker open.

Spoiler:
The Chest in Helm's Hold's Prison (near the Zombie Lord in the far north (the one w/ the Deadly Fire trap on it)), cannot be bashed. I believe it's 40/+2 physical, immune to all elemental, and 100 % immune to slashing and piercing. It's not likely to get a +3 mace type of thing in C1 (only +3 you can get in Ch1 is Shurikens and Darts?). It also have a picklock rating of 40, so Tomi can't open it either... I wonder what's inside...

I know that chest that you're talking about, it seems pretty immune to everything, guess you need to have a rogue character that restarts from the beginning with level 20 to find out what's in it.
I'm not even talking that far ahead though, the +2 soak 40 is in Meldanen's Estate. The problem with using things that does elemental damage is that, unless you're a monk, most items that does elemental damage in Chapter 1 require you to be in level 8. Which is possible, but you need to really milk the crap out of everything, you need to do the Nurse Cheat, kill just about every NPC you come across, the quest save, and all the other tricks to even get to level 8. And it's driving me friggin NUTS!
I've played through chapter 1 with about 12 different characters (can't make up my mind) and I've notcied that soloing doesn't really even give you THAT much more exp. All soloing really allows you to do is get to that next level maybe one or two floors faster than having a henchmen, besides, even with a henchman, you still get to level 20 by the end of the game anyways.

The chest can be opened when playing with a non-multiclassed rogue. By the time I made it to the chest I was a level 9 rogue and trap disarm & picklocked were both successful. The only problem was recovering the trap. I was just a few points shy of recovering it. I believe it to be a random treasure. The time I opened it there was a Greater Cloak of Protection vs Chaos. Just another example of why being a rogue is so cool.

Once I found a locked chest which was empty after I took pains to open it. But when I just bashed that same chest instead of opening it, it would left some minor treasure on the ground (gold and potions). I repeated both actions just out of curiosity with the same result.
May you find me worthy of your attention, outlander.

@Yuusuke. You don't have to do all that to reach 8th in Chapter 1. I've had characters consistently reaching level 9 in chapter one and Ive never killed any of the nurses or killed any npc that wasn't aggressive. I did do all the quests. And I didnt do it all solo. My sorceror/druid finished at level 9 with a familiar, an animal companion and a henchman.

Well, I do all the quests too, and I haven't been able to reach level 8 with a henchmen for a while. I do remember my first two characters reaching level 9 in chapter 1, but I don't know why I haven't been able to do it since. I do everything...

Yuusuke, did your first two charaters not have pets? They seem to lessen your XP considerably (what with them being 3 levels higher and BioWare messing up XP calculation).
I recently traded Tomi for Daelan, and between him and my Tenser's Sword (+3, 1d6 fire), doors and chest go down with only a few hits. What's annoying is that the loot actually takes some time to spawn on the ground, so you're looking at bare tiles for a couple of seconds before you can pick it up.

Nope, in fact my very first two characters I had no idea what I was doing, it was a fighter and paladin. And they even had henchmens. I just know that by the time I got to Helm's Hold I was at level 9. Almost to 10 too. I don't know wtf is up.

Thats wierd Yuusuke. Im all out of ideas. Perhaps it depends a little on which route you take through the city, I know the game scales with you to an extent but the higher you get the easier the game gets. I noticed that the thugs in the Peninsula are easy regardless of level but if I held off the undead in the graveyard and Crypts were still decently challenging even when I was doing that sector of the city last at nearly 9th level. Oh and the longer you hold off on the fights in the Gauntlet the harder they are because you are fighting other characters of your own level or higher rather than hordes of crappy low level enemies.

One problem with thumping seems to be that the person opening a container is the one that determines what treasure comes out. Level, class and proficiencies are used in that process, so if your henchman knocks open all chests for you, you get lower level treasure of a type you're less likely able to use.

It is my understanding that bashing and using certain spells does destroy certain object..
Fire spells should destroy spells, due to the flamability of paper. Bsdhing can posibly break bottles of potiond...
At least this isd this is the case using the true 3rd edition rules soelled out in the player guide,,,

NWN containers aren't quite that complex. They simply run a particular script when they're opened or destroyed (whichever happens first). Those scripts look at all sorts of stats on the opener, but not at the way the container was destroyed...
