Does anyone actually USE charm person?
I'm through the game three times now and have yet to use this spell. Is it good for anything?

i used it a few times in irenicus dungeon my first time through, but after that no because i figured it was way to easy to save against, you can't use it against undead, and many human enemies you face will have charm protecting equipment. if i'm gonna charm somethin, i'll use dire charm (don't use that much either though)
here's a question, does anyone use flesh to stone? does it work?

Every normal man must be tempted at times to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and start slitting throats.

Once you charm someone, they can't talk to you, thus no selling. I used it the other day when I came into the Promenade with Vic and some loony went after her. I knew if I whacked him, the guards and everyone else would be on me, so I charmed him and led him off to a little corner, where he could just sit and think about the bad thing he'd done...
nad no lost rep points for me...

IIRC when the loony(elf-hater) goes hostile, the guard will kick his arse

Charm Person is a worthless spell as far as your spell casting is considered. Whom do you want to charm? The human opponents are either weak (so as they do not need the spell) or highly resistant to it in general.
On the other hand, the spell is effective against you: your party consists of human-like beings and the members of the party have rather lamentable saving throws. You can choose: either to use helms of Charm Protection or use better helms and risk charming. Never seen a black dragon charming somebody of your party? It's ready for reload.

The friends spell is what you should use when at a merchants, it makes a significant difference to the price you buy at. In BG I used Algernons (sp) cloak to brilliant effect which is basically a charm spell. It was great fun getting an enemy mage to waste all of his/her spells before wasting them.
When you're confronted with a mass of enemies charm can be used effectively against a lower order enemy, the advantage being that it occupies its mates giving you the opportunity to regroup. The main problem is making sure that no one, esp. summoned creatures attack it while you're trying to charm it

There is a gut in D'Arnise Keep (bodygaurd, inside keep, whacking great big sword) who you can charm when he attacks. He's a tough fight and you get more XP for charming him anyway (the bad guys had him charmed in the first place). Otherwise, I rarely use the spell - it is handy for rmoving one baddie from a fight but rarely works. Strangely, the computer can always make my charcters fail their charm saves... how odd

@#%$& Grunt beat me to it!!! I think this is the only time I used the spell all the times I've been through the game.
Funny, in PnP AD&D, I thought the spell was too powerful.

yknow the fight in the cc where your pc has to square off in the wrestling ring against that ****y thug? my 9th lvl sorcerer with nothing but his 1st and 2nd lvl spells beat him by casting charm person and acid arrow. charm him, make him walk opposite my pc, then plunk him with an acid arrow. now I suppose i couldve magic missiled him but i found that combo more entertaining. heh
