Neutral alignment=church of Helm (?)

Does your alignment "choose for you" which church you can quest for?

No...but alignment does figure into which church you burgle when you perform quests for Mae-var.

If you're a cleric, or a dual-/multi-class cleric, your alignment does determine which cleric stronghold you quest for: good-aligned clerics get temple of Lathander, evil clerics get temple of Talos, and neutral clerics get temple of Helm. Ranger/clerics, due to an oversight of the programmers, can't get the cleric stronghold. There may be a patch available at Baldurdash that fixes this.

fable,

I've checked out Mae Var's quest with IE, and it's actually your reputation that determines which quest he gives you, unless you're a priest of Lathander.

What happened here was the gradual habituation of the people, ... to receiving decisions deliberated in secret; to believing that the situation was so complicated that the government had to act on information which the people could not understand, or so dangerous that, even if he people could understand it, it could not be released because of national security.

Sojourner, do you mean that the game looks at whether your reputation is above or below a certain point, and then sends you to steal from Talos (if above) or Lathander (if below) that point?

Yes, the game checks your reputation:

If your rep < 10, you get the "Steal the statuette from the Lathander temple quest".

If your rep > 9, you get the "Steal the Talos necklace" quest.

If any of the players is a priest of Lathander AND you select the dialogue "Better that he die an honest man..", you will always get the "Steal the Talos necklace" quest.

Are you sure?
Does this happen ALL the time?
And if it does, does the official patch fix it? And if that doesn't work, is there another way to get around it, i.e. getting the cleric stronghold when using a ranger/cleric (dualled) nonetheless?

Quite sure. I started a game with a ranger/cleric a while back (to get the druid spells) and was surprised when the cleric stronghold was never offered. I checked the dialogue files with IE to find out why, and that's when I discovered that ranger/cleric was not in the list of multi-/dual- classes that the game checks for the cleric stronghold. Since this is an oversight, and not a bug, I don't know if the patch fixes this. You might be able to get around this problem with a dual-class ranger/cleric by going to the temple district while your ranger class is inactive.

And you expected otherwise? We all make choices in our lives. Consider taking an extended trip abroad. ;)
