Mages?

Post by Gorgan »

What keeps a mage from getting boring? I ve played a mage before and could never get it to become interesting. Is there something im doing wrong or what?

I also thought of some awesome dual classes for a mage, ill post on those later

I just started playing as a mage for the first time and what's keeping it interesting for me probably won't for you. I'm just trying new romance's, this time Jaheira, new party members and since I haven't been a mage the stronghold looks pretty good to me.

Try a wild mage and don't use chaos shield. A wild mage is interesting because he can be a life saver OR he can be the downfall of your party, screwing up a fight with a miscast spell. You'll never know until it's too late! Minutes before this I was giving the Twisted Rune quest a try. We were badly hurt but winning and all that was left was Shangalar himself. My WM tried to cast acid arrow only to blow himself (and most of the party) up with a fireball. :D

Well, if you find mages boring, with all their spells and combos available, what about fighters?

I think he's saying mages are boring exactly because they can never rush into a fight and smash everyone to pieces with weapons like Celestial Fury or Crom Fayer... I know the feeling, you find all those cool weapons and can't even equip them...
There's nothing interesting a mage could use as a weapon in all SoA, short of the staff of the magi, if you think of it!
Ask yourself why you want to play a kensay/mage! ;)
(Or why someone should want to play a blade) :D
Where we came from, we don't know
Where we're going.... (even worse)
And about who we could be, we actually have trouble in clearly defining the term "to be" in the first place...

In addition to what's already has been said, try to really roleplay your PC Mage.

I once played a male Invoker named Wilfred Wildfire. He more or less exclusively used firebased spells. With a Ring of Fire, a Robe of Fire Resistance and the spell Fireshield (Red), he was immune to fire and just loved throwing Fireballs on himself in midst of his enemies (Anomen was equipped with the Red Dragon Scales, Helm and Shield and thus didn't care much but the others chose to stay a safe distance away when the inferno began...). He wielded the Staff of Fire and the throwing Dagger Firetooth, of course.

Another time a played a male Necromancer (named Astafas IIRC). He relied heavily on the Necromantic touch spells, such as Ghoul Touch and Vampiric Touch, and the Summon Undead spell once he hit level 15.

These sure ain't the most effective way to play a Mage. However, they do make it more interesting, and that's what matters for me.

Maybe a Bard would be at better choise for you. Much more versatile and allows you to use all weapons (and later all items as well).

Here's some links of interest:

And while I'm at it, why not put some new light on the old Ordinary Bard Song Mystery?
