History rules! But it doesn't pay the bills all that well . . .

If you didn't like history because you couldn't remember names and dates, you probably had bad teachers.

You are probably right. All but one were terrible, but that one instilled in me a love of history that has become a lifelong avocation.

Well history intrerests me tremendously, thats why I would go into the field. But, unfortunetly there isnt many jobs that cover it well. Teaching it is the biggest field that comes to mind, but I aint going to be a teacher. That would be me practically naming my tombstone. :D The students would eat me alive. If I can get a good hold on statistics, that can open up many fields for me. But also communication and writing aswell.

Dates bother me a bit in history, but thats not whats truly important in history.

If you're seriously thinking about going into history, get used to hearing, "What are you going to do? Teach?" It's not a question.

There are many things you can do with a history, not the least of which includes law school, academia, museum curator, etc. I think one of the coolest things would be to work as a consultant on period movies and other media productions (this is where the film school part comes in).

Although I have two history degrees, my job has nothing to do with research or teaching; I work in advancement services for a private fund-raising foundation. I'm also a part-time computer geek.

Whatever major you pick, make sure that you enjoy it. Don't get an accounting degree because that's what your parents want. You're wasting your time and their money. If you want to play guitar in a band or be a liberal arts major, play guitar in a band and major in English; just make sure you can cover your bills and sock some away for retirement.

Indeed. Well my dads major was history and his job ended up being................................an english teacher. :D
Ive heard that statement/question 2 or 3 times already when Im mentioning what Im thinking about my majors. It doesnt bother me in the slightest.

But thats good advice.

A liberal arts degree is still one of the best buys for the buck. you can study pretty much what ever you are interested in and still come out with a marketable degree. If you decide to really specialize in something you can always tack a master's on the end. ;)
