Which mage Familiar?

Post by Somnus »

I've not much experience with mages and thus no clue as to which familiar is best, or the effects of each. Ironically I've lvled my char up to the point where if I don't decide on one soon, I'll be stuck with one permanently. I know in the long run you can summon more powerful creatures, but I'd still like to know what each of the familiars does. I've noticed that they have more powers and effects than what's listed in the lvl up windows. I'm hoping that someone has experimented with each of them enough and can give me some info that will help me make my decision, or know of an existing guide or posting on this subject. This isn't for single player so I've no real need for the pixie, to free up my rogue requirements for henchmen.

Actually imo, appart from the Pixi, for the obvious reasons of rogue abilities, I doubt there is "a best".
Look the list over and see what you like.

My personal favorite is the panter, due to his ability to deal a nice amount of damage out as assistant of a primary tank (sneak attack) :)

Familiars at a glance

From looking at the list of familiars the panther seems to do the most dmg and have the most hp. The only downside is it's number of attacks and lower attack bonus. Yet according to some of the information on this site and some of my oberservations, the familiars have more capabilities than listed. Problem is that I can't find any exact listing of these enhancements or to what degree they are. Perhaps these are the default abilities of the type of creature, but then where are such stats listed?

On the right edge of the familiar's name button, a question mark will appear when you point your mouse over it:

something like this.

--------------
|pixie [?] |
---------------

Press that button, and some more special abilities are shown.

One more good side of the panther is his dodge he can really dodge nicely

pixy is good if you can stand the sound but then again you will be able to take a better and less annoying henchmen

I tired other familairs but they never seemed to use anything nice like the hellhound his firey breath

panther owned for me but next time I'm taking a pixi

If you don't mind the evil familiar the hellhound has the most hp and the firebreath is pretty cool.

IMO there is no diference.
The only a little diferent is the pixxie, because of the thief abilities, but these abilities are also inutile since you can destroy locked things, and all others familiars can disable traps by walking over it. :) .
I don't use them.

I really think the original 3rd edition rules for familiars better than bioware rules.

Don't go powergaming!
Pick the familiar that you think is the coolest and/or fits the best with your character. :)

I think the best wizard/sorc familiar is the pixie, hire daelen as merc and get greater planer binding and you wil have

a) a fantastic theif
b) 2 reasonable fighters
c) a good mage (well you SHOULD have a good mage, ;-))

If you go for the tomi/panther or the daelen/panther you either loose fighting power or a thief both of which are helpful.
