I'm at the first level of the lower levels of Durlagh's Tower (the one with the four warders and their riddles).
I found the Beljuril and gave it to one of the warders (Greed). He acknowledged (and disappeared). But I can't do the other quests.
- I read the four books but nothing happens
- I stand next to the machine (I have the switch) and click on it and nothing happens (I always get the same message that the switch is broken off etc.)
- none of the three other warders will speak to me
Any help would be appreciated.

I tried doing the level again from an older save, but still the same problem with the books. And already two of the warders are again refusing to speak to me after I spoke to them a first time.

You need to read the books detailing the exploits of Durlag from left to right, now go into the next room with the big suspended sword. It should now be glowing with a pink aoura around it. Click on it to get the message that you've succeeded.

The important part with the Sword is that it must be able to "see" a party member to deliver its message - I learned this the hard way when I sent in a stealthy thief.
There's nothing a little poison couldn't cure...

I think something else is wrong because the machine for the powering the grape-press doesn't react to me having the switch either. That and some of the wardens not talking to me. It's like I'm not there ... .
I'm soloing BTW.
Well, I'll just have to cheat-create the wardstone to the next level. Too bad, I was looking forward to the fight against the four warders.

Actually, UncleScratchy, you gave me a good idea. I re-installed the TOSC-patch (the latest version of it?). It didn't repair my saved game, but when I did that level once again of Durlag's Tower: it worked.
Probably some of the things I installed later (like the XP-remover or the high level-rules) had interfered with my earlier installation of the patch. Well, something did.
Anyway, re-installing the patch worked.

Ah yes, I remember reading about this somewhere, though I never encountered it myself, because TotSC was buggy in other ways and I had gotten the patch prior to hitting Durlag's Tower.Originally posted by UncleScratchy
Hacking the wardstone may not help if you haven't got the patch or a patched version of ToTSC. There was a infamous bug with ToTSC when it first came out that would hang you up in Durlags Tower. Nothing would work correctly.

I really need to reread that book, its fascinating reading and its "matter of fact, gettin' down to business" style of narrative reminds me a lot of Grant's memoirs of the US Civil War.
Today I only remember "Gallia est omnia divisa in partes tres, quarum unam incolant Belgae..." and "Cum esset Caesar in citeriore Gallia, ...". That and getting bad grades.
