I heard a general speak once at Lackland AFB(Air force base) in texas about who they fight for. He said and to quote incorrectly
*I forget it all*
"At first you sign up for you and your country, then you go to war to fight for the freedom of your family, then you engage combat and realize that the only thing that now matters to you is not your nation, family, or especaily your general. All that matters is that man standing next to you who you know is willing to die for you, and you sir are willing to die for him your brother"
Something along the lines of that (btw it wasn't to me it was to my brother who was in the camp, I was there just not during the speech)
So in the end I believe I along the lines of grunts post, sometimes you dont have a choice. Honor and Loyalty...

Thats hardly SPAMming, Thug. Thats a very good quote. But do you think it applies beyond just military means in your own perspective?

“Caw, Caw!” The call of the wild calls you. Are you listening? Do you dare challenge their power? Do you dare invade? Nature will always triumph in the end.

Hm
Beyond military? Yes. In the same level of life/death situation.. rarely.
In a civilian life I would think the idea of fighting for the person standing next to you could be intergrated into work/house holds etc. Kind of like how our IT department always makes sure we stay safe and get out of trouble, we keep an eye out for someone even if we kinda dont like them. But we are a team. And at home how me and my brother used to build up elaborate lies to help each other out (say I broke something he wouldn't rat me out, he would help me get out of it).
I guess it would be in the same sense. Work is a better example. We all are employee's of Edelbrock, we all have bosses higher than the IT department, but in the end it isnt for the end users (morons) or our bosses its for each other.
I tried to enlist but being a true geek I was dissallowed..

i agree with CE, that you can do more by working throughout your life for your cause than you can conceivably do by dying for it. if i could wipe out various world problems by dying, then maybe i would, but that is entirely hypothetical. if something is worth dying for, then it's damn well worth living for.
Just to clear up my stand on this, I don't mean I would get in line to get killed or intentionally die for my cause. I only meant to say that IMO, freedom and my way of life is something that I am willing to fight to keep. In that context, if I am willing to fight for my personal freedom in the evnt that it is jeopardized, then I have to face the fact that there is a possiblity that I may die in the effort, not by choice, but because it is the nature of the type of fight I mean that some pople will die while others live. In that context, yes, I would take the risk of dying.

Oh boy, here is a topic that I've heard about quite a lot. Living in an area pretty much full of families who are either part of the defence forces or have been part of it, close friends included and from trying stupid extreme sports once in a while. The "would you die for" discussions have raged on for quite a while. A few years to be exact, characterised chiefly by loud and heated debates and the ever constant straining of friendships.
However we have reached a conclusion, most of us would not choose to die for a "cause", its one thing to say that you will but the animal instinct to survive would usually kick in at the very last moment. (Thats why they have a spare person on planes when you go skydiving - He pushes you out) I guess if it was something personal that would greatly affect my family or even close friends then maybe the cause would be honourable enough to die for.
But even then I wouldn't think that I would go through with what ever the cause is, I'm not calling myself a coward or anything. I would eagerly sign up just like the next person if we get into a war much alike those of the WW1 and WW2, but not out of a desire to sacrifice myself for my country or cause. I would push myself to my limits to honour my commitment to the "cause" and if that means dying then so be it. But to me, the desire to live is greater then the desire to become a martyr.
I hope that made sense

"I cant get hurt see, Im not like other people.. I have this thing about pain, it hurts me" (Ho ho ho, dumb quote)
I think thats quote answers the question...
if its war.. Ill stay home,
If its religion, Ill stay in the grey area
If its polotics, Ill feign ignorance
*COUGH* .. *AHEM* im no coward, uhh.. Its just that, I cant see the world without me, what would be the point? No me = Sad world, Its out of duty that I live, becouse without me.. No one else would want to...
"Is your ego Satisfied?" (Ho ho ho, dumb quote)
Hell yeah!
Realisticly, For me, Its cynisism rather than fear of death.. I mean, some guy has to organise whatever your doing thats going to lead to your death, so why aint he dyin? Couse if he aint, neither am I...
There you have it, Cynical coward... Proud of it too

"Stayin alive,
Stayin alive,
Ah ah ah ah stayin aliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiive"
(Ho ho ho, very dumb quote)
On a much more serios note...
Violence is really rancid stuff, Consider that.. My couse, as I would put it, is to live in a place where there is none, my beleif is that its not gained by crushing everyone who disagrees with you, infact, peace isnt even fighting back.. And yet, when It came to it, I would die rather than kill, so in effect.. Im dying for a couse, not a very 'Macho' couse, but once with more worth than any religous or political excuse
So, its not charging off to war, to fight for the ideals of your nation, but rather.. Stayin home to fight inside your head, for ideals of morality and peace
Thats my take
(Im not a hippy, by the way.. I like bathing and I dont like poetry and hippy type music makes me violently sick, so poot and dang to anyone who says different)

i would die for my best friend, without hesitating(well of course i would hesitate, dying is permanent i've heard.. ) but you know what i mean, if it would be the (bg2 cage/button pressing) i'd press the button.
i'd die for my country to ensure it stays free, but not many other things...
i don't know what kind of a feeling it is to be a parent but i know i'd kill the bastard who'd hurt my (peers into the far far far horizon) kids/wife

All these things are worth dying for, and if I were absolutely certain that my dying would have the instant effect of solving one of these problems completely and properly, I (and I'm sure anyone else) would die without a second though...however, that can never happen (of course). The world is too complicated, and dying very rarely does anyone any good at all. I doubt that a cause could ever occur in this world which I would die for. I don't think dying would help.
I don't think I would die for that.
Yes:...For my family, my country, my freedom, your freedom, I would fight with everything inside me, untill my last breath. Because without these things, I don't think I would care to live anyway...

Yes:...For my family, my country, my freedom, your freedom,
and ..."for freedom" - hmmmmmm.... Freedom is inside my head. And even in "free" countries all over the world people are repressed - so "freedom" as a general principle is not enough to die... at least for me.
The only thing I'd do - would be "for family" - as I stated at the beginning of this thread.
