Despite the loads of comments already made, I thought I'd add my few cents in. :D

Morrowind - Absolutely the best SP 1st person RPG I have played yet. I like the gaming system, and the attention to detail devoted to this game in general is exceptional. IMO, nothing compares to it yet. The ease of adding mods to this game is very pleasing, to say the least. It's pretty user friendly.

If you are looking for the finest RPG series ever, look no further than Baldur's Gate. Enough cannot be said of this series.

Planescape: Torment ranks right there with BG, and is slightly more engrossing in a personal way. I stayed up very late at night trying to gain my memories back. :D No sequel, however. :(

A good time-killer for you: MechCommander 2. I liked that one alot. Toasting Battlemechs is always fun. :D

Another good time killer: Jedi Knight 2: Outcast. The stormtroopers die in a nice theatrical manner. One time, I kept shooting one as he fell, and he did somersaults in the air. Also, there is something satisfying about frying your opponents with Force Lightning. The graphics are sweet on this one.

Have fun!

NWN is pretty good if you ignore the pre-packaged SP campaign and grab a bunch of friends to play some user-created mods in MP. That being said, the game is not nearly as engrossing or enjoyable a SP experience as Morrowind.

Deus Ex has been mentioned and it's very good (it's a long game too, so you get your money's worth) and Deus Ex II is due out soon (so they say anyway). Undying is worth playing and there are a few mods out there (a la Half-Life) to extend it's life on your HD. All the Bioware and Black Isle stuff is great fun, but they're not 1st-person so may not be your cup o' tea...they're worth a look tho.

I got Blood Omen II from a friend who bought it thinking it would be a continuation of Blood Omen and was dissappointed that it was a third-person shooter (ie. Max Payne...btw: another fun game). I played it and finished it in about 8 hours, but had an absolute blast the whole time! :D

A game that I've been looking forward to, but is still vaporware ATM, is Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth by Fishtank/Headfirst. It looks to be a SP and MP, 1st-person CoOp romp through Chaosium's Lovecraftian PnP game. What I've seen so far looks good, but the release has been set back until Spring of '03...I hope it doesn't end up in the 'unfinished games graveyard'.

BTW: Another recent game that doesn't fit into the shooter, RTS, or RPG categories, but has a little of all of the above, is Freedom Force. If you like (or used to like) comic books, Kirby-esque artwork and a fun campy setting, then this game is a real hoot. :)

@Sirius_Sam: LOL! I was just thinking about getting Freedom Force the other day. It looked appealing. Glad to hear a positive review of it - I think I'll pick it up next time I swing by the store. :D

I can only agree with Planescape Torment and Baldur's Gate(Don't know the others).

And of course Morrowind.

MMORPGs

I haven't heard any great reviews on any of the existing games, so I haven't tried any. One is on the way however: Shadowbane. Check it out here: http://www.shadowbane.com

It looks very impressive.

Combo RPG, Strategy, 1st, 2nd, 3rd Person who knows. :D

Further to other posts on this thread, Deus Ex was a stupendous game; sure the graphics are a little ropey by modern standards but it had good character development and a superb storyline, coupled with lots of action and different methods of doing things.

As far as pure RPG goes, IMHO, there has been nothing to beat the BG series - I lost many months of free time to those!

Morrowind has to be the best thing to hit the shelves since BGII ToB. It has been the only game to get any playing time on my machine since its release.

You should try Diablo II. If you don't know, it's an ARPG in a 2D third person view. The graphics aren't really good but it's the gameplay that counts. Personally I think it's the best game ever and I have several friends that think the same. The best about it is that you can play it unlimited times and not get tired of it. Almost all of the levels are randomized. I have played it at least 1500 hours, problably more and I think you should try it. Visit for example http://www.diabloii.net for more information.

Btw, I don't know why some pick at the graphics in NWN. Sure the main plot sucks but the graphics in 64mb textures mode is stunning. Also one thing with morrowind is that the journal is really confusing. I think it would have worked much better if for example it sorted out completed quests.

Something different then RPS's

Grand theft auto 3 looks really awsome.
It's fun to play and very original (other then 1&2 cause it's 3d)

Hitman is very cool.
It's a bit older and you need lots of patience, but it's worth it.

Max Payne, simply rocks!
Awsome story, looks great and a Matrix like gameplay.
A must have! :)
Guinness is good for you.
Gives you strength.

I hope to get Divine Divinity in less than a week. The devs speak of it as very Ultima VII-influenced, in that if an object exists, it can be used and/or acted upon. Sounds interesting.

Morrowind: best first person, single-character RPG I've come across, save that Gothic had superior NPC development and dialog.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

Only one minus, no motorbikes! that's really to bad, it would have been great to cruise around in town on a bike.
