Most over-rated rock/pop star

Post by fable »

Let's hear what you think! Brittney? Elvis? Bon Jovi?

My own vote goes to Rod Stewart, simply because he actually believes all the crap he's been slinging through the years about his own superstar status. At best, he could do a second-rate credible Stones imitation (Hot Legs), with a voice that makes Mick Jaeger sound like Enrico Caruso. And the ego on the guy could easily light up Cleveland, Ohio, for a month.

Bruce Springsteen. He has added absolutely nothing to a genre that was dull, stale, uncreative and superficial to begin with.

Britney Spears. No talent, no voice, nothing else of interest. IMHO.

That and he's a soccer-fan.

Then start a thread and praise him for being a soccer fan. ;) He's a third-rate, imitative rock star who thrives on a cult of lookalikes ("Roddies"). He's the William Shatner of rock.

Besides, this isn't the thread to argue with people's choices. It's the thread to state your choices. :D

Now that's a condemnation if ever there was one!

I'd say, Britney Spears. She can't sing, she certainly can't act, and I seriously doubt she could outwit a used teabag. I simply don't see what all the fuss is about.

Prince and Michael Jackson are horribly over rated, though I think Usher is awful. Not one good thing has come from him. And every boy band like N'Sync and Backstreet boys should be dragged into the street and run over by several elephants, tanks and, of course, Fat Bastard. :D

I disagree with Prince as over-rated, the man IMO is a musicla genious, hey, he produced a hit record for Sinead o'Conner, that's saying a lot. And his music has always been interesting to me

On the other hand, Marilyn Manson did NOTHING that hadn't been done before, and better. :D

In my veiw almost any musician has some talent or merit...

But then again, Im a mediocre singer and guitarist and no one pays me millions of dollars for it :(

Ok though.. Heres my bet,

Tom Morello

this guy is 'overrated' , that is not to say that he is a bad guitarist, infact.. hes bloody awesome, just not quite as good as he or those around him think.

He gets alot of praise from people like Joe Satriani, who just play this soulless superfast fusion crap which is technicly proficent but as I said, soulless

The most warped thing about though.. Is that I think Morello was a better player than most of the people who threw there 'Oh, Im the god all all that is played on six strings.. And I proclaim *This man* to be the blah blah blah' style praise in his direction

So there.. overrated

And Ive got another....

Led Zepplin

yes, the whole damn band, aside from plant, I do have to admit that there musical talent is second to none..

But they rip off way to much old blues and get heaps of praise for the uhhh, ten songs on three albums they did that were good.

They have no place being mentioned alongside Sabbath or any other such legends of the time

Thats all Imo (Its music, it has to be)

Eminem.

My vote goes to a fellow Aussie, Kylie Minogue (aptly described by one reviewer as a "narcissistic dwarf"). Michael Jackson and boy bands in general would be likely candidates as well.

Led Zeppelin are a great band in my book.

*tries to think of something nice to say about Sabbath* Well, i guess they're loud, and, um, they did "Paranoid" which is good and they did, um, er, *tries to think of another song of theirs that anyone apart from really devoted fans has ever heard of.....

Micheal Jackson, Brittney spears and all her blonde lookalikes, like Mandy Moore and Christine Agu....something. Boy bands are really pathtetic but everybody here knows that.

Going a bit back i think some of the early 90s songs were overrated and all of them one hit wonders. Like the group who sang the song Zombie - i forgot the name of the group.

re - Michael Jackson and Prince, I think that however much you hate these people, it cannot be denied that they made records unlike those anyone else had ever made before, and I think that is worth something :) .

LOL @ Fable and his Shatner fixation :D

My vote goes to The Ramones.

I never tought of tem as over-rated. In fact I lik a number of their songs and they never dawn on me as a hyped group.

Definitely boybands everywhere... pure and sheer marketing and taking advantage of those screaming teeny-boppers everywhere... then again, that's life for you for a number of teen-age girls.

Milli Vanilli is another classic example of over-rated popstars. They even won a major award (Tony or Emmy? :o , sorry, I'm too ignorant to remember) and had the award revoked when they were proven to be fakes.

NOt neccessarily. Listen carefully to u2's lyrics; most songs sound like they are about love, correct? What is unique about u2 is that they're lyrics can be for romance, as well as for politics, and for religion.

GENIUS, i tell ya!
