Robe of Vecna question

Post by Stilgar »

The robe of vecna set's you're base AC to 5.
dousn't thius mean that if my mage has a base ac of 8 and with all his magic stuff an ac of 1 and i put on the robe of Vecna he should have an AC of -2????
I do not have the touch, nor do I have the power.

As long as none of the magic items also set your base AC to a certain amount - like the Bracers of Defense. If all of the items give bonus to AC, then yes, with the Robe of Vecna your AC will be -2. If you have items that set base AC as well, then only the item that have the best base AC is use.

Do braces of defence lower you're AC like a armour or do they chance you're base AC?

It's all the same:

Bracers of defense, armour, robe of vecna all set your base AC to a determined amount
Being an Evil Overlord seems to be a good career choice. It pays well, there are all sorts of perks and you can set your own hours. However every Evil Overlord I've read about in books or seen in movies invariably gets overthrown and destroyed in the end. I've noticed that no matter whether they are barbarian lords, deranged wizards, mad scientists or alien invaders, they always seem to make the same basic mistakes every single time. Therefore, if I ever happen to become an Evil Overlord, ...

An armor does both those things, and so do those Bracers of Defense. They change your ac by lowering the base. So if you're wearing a VRobe and a Bracers of Defense AC 3, then the ac adjustment on the VRobe is ignored in favor of the lower AC on the bracers. However I want to point out that a VRobe is still the best Robe for mages in SoA, because of the -4 casting speed.

robe of Vecna, and perharps teh robes of the archmage are the only robes that don't suck.

It's ridiculous that, ignoring the robe of vecna, you finish ToB with the same robes that you had in BG1

And if you don't ignore the Robe of Vecna? You definitely finish ToB with the same robe. :D

Hope that thing gets cleaned every now and then! Blood stains, brains of yucky creatures, slimy goo squirted at you...

BTW, there is one other robe that does not suck; the Robe of the Apprenti. No specials, but has base AC 3.
