Hello,
I just dual-classed my level 13 Kensai to a thief. I selected long sword and short bow as her skills. Afterward, when I went to the inventory screen, I found that she's restricted from equiping any short bows (or slings). Nor, can she equip any type of gauntlet. There are no thief-class restrictions on the items she's trying to equip so I'm puzzled.
As I understood it, once she dualed to a thief her Kensai restrictions wouldnt apply any longer and she could use any equipment allowed by her new thief class (i.e., missle weapons). Is this not true? Also, on the inventory screen it now lists her as a Fighter/Thief (not a "Thief", nor even a "Kensai/Thief"), why is this?
Thanks. I won't continue to play BG2 until I learn whether this is a bug, or simply an aspect of the game I was unclear about... so please respond and give me some advice.

Glitch with Dual-class Kensai/Theif - I need advice...
You need to get 3 million XP in your Thief class and get the Use Any Item ability. Then you will lose all equipment restrictions.

Thanks for your reply... but thieves can use short bows and slings as part of their initial skills. So there shouldnt be a need to get the "use any item" ability to use a short bow.
My question ties more to why Kensai restrictions seem to be inhibiting my character even though I just dualed her to a thief. Shouldn't the thief's item restrictions now apply to my character?
Thanks again.
PS: I restored a saved game and dualed my Kensai to a cleric and the Kensai item restrictions were preventing my new cleric from wielding a sling. In this case, I a "use any item" ability isn't even a possible solution.

Ethos-related restrictions stack on top of other restrictions and stay with you even when you multi- or dual class.
Mages cannot use shortbows because they lack training. When multi-d or dualled they learn how, so they can use them.
Clerics, Druids, Kensai, Cavaliers and Beastmasters cannot use certain stuff due to their convictions. These convictions do not leave them when they dual or multi, so the restrictions stay as well.
Use Any Item is the only thing (that I know of) that overcomes all restrictions, with the exception of ability score requirements (which cannot be overcome).
