Munchkin characters

Post by cjdevito »

Bear in mind I'm in only three days into the game, but a couple of character types I've been playing around with definitely fit the powergaming bill....

1. Rogue with 1 lvl of ranger and 1 lvl of barbarian. Since you're always going to be in light armor anyway, take advantage of the rangers free dual wield feats and the barbs faster movement. If you're using a character that can get up to 20 dex on char creation (tiefling, elf, etc), max it and take weapon finesse. You'll want high dex for your skills/AC anyways, and an extra +5 to BAB doesn't hurt.

2. Monks. Either a half-orc monk (drop int and chr to minimums, max everything else) for a powerhouse or a svirneblin monk (max wis and dex) for a super tank with an untouchable AC.

3. For the first time in a D&D computer game, druid shape shifting doesn't suck . Even the first form, boar, is worthwhile... although strangely the elementals are underpowered and the best overall forms are dire bear and dire panther.

paladin / fighter sounds good. but maybe a dwarf paladin (lvl 2) / fighter (lvl x) is the better choice. of course you could also do it the other way round aasimar fighter (lvl 4) / paladin (lvl x)

A dwarven fighter/paladin makes more sense because both classes take advantage of the race's con bonus, aasimar paladin/sorceror or clerics make more sense because both classes take advantage of the inherent stat bonuses. Thats min-maxing which isn't necessarily munchkinism, just taking advantage of what the rules give you.

the problem with dwarf fighter/paladin is the charisma penalty, sure it's not a huge factor but if you take paladin lvl for the bonus to saving throws then you might consider some other race that doesn't suffer charisma penalty

Yeah, I'm with Ares. This isn't NWN where you have to try and snag every advantage with just one character. With six, you have the freedom to build on their individual strengths rather then water them down by attempting to make them so multi-purpose.

I'm tempted, btw, to add duergar fighter/cleric of tempus to my list of munchkin characters. Haven't played one long enough yet to decide for sure, but the +6 to strength on a fighter is quite significant.

Wasn't the gold dwarf included in the subraces? I don't know since I haven't created a dwarf yet but I think I read somewhere that was one of the subraces. If so they take a dex penalty not a cha penalty. This is less of a problem for a character who will likely use heavy armor.

The Gold Dwarf Paladin/Fighter multi-class works great (I had been planning one for a long time prior to IWD2's release). There are some good min/maxing combos to be found here (Shameless plug). Image
Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.
