noob - abilities stats questions

Post by free_fall »

I created a human ranger with stats of

STR 18/85
DEX 18
CON 18
INT 12
WIS 14
CHA 10

Is this decent?

TIA

More than good enough. Intelligence might have been lower as it's pretty useless if you're not a mage. Wisdom the same if you're not a clecric/druid. What's your race?If it's elven I should get dexterity to 19, especially if you're an archer.

Race is human.

STR, DEX and CON wouldn't go any higher and WIS wouldn't go any lower, so the only thing I had to play with was INT and CHA.

Played a Ranger for the first time in NWN and was looking forward to playing it in IWD2 but read on the boards how, now with 3rd Ed, anyone can dual-wield and rangers have become underpowered in consequence. Plus, made the mistake of starting IWD2 on my PC at work and had just passed my 1st lvl up before being off for 10 days; didn't feel like starting a 2nd game of it at home, so decided to play SoA/ToB again.... as a ranger ;)

Elves make the best Rangers, so make him an Elf. They get bonuses with longswords and bows, and can get 19 dex, all of which are better than being able to dual class.

Aack! Too late, already started the game.

Actually, started him out as a half-elf, got to the Appearance step and didn't like his looks, so started over as a human.

Elves suffer from a dread malady known as... "Gayness"

Its a soley asthetic affliction, possibly a lingering a lingering contractual catch from when there race collectivly SOLD ITS SOUL FOR AND EXTRA POINT OF DEX

Dont worry, 19 dex doesnt give you any more ac bonus and unless your using missle weps it dont help (Even then, the bonus is mediocre)

The +1 to hit and dmg with longswords is great, if your going to use a longsword.. But considering that, for every longsword there a weapon thats as good or better even to the point of overriding the +1 to hit / dmg, I wouldnt take fright

And elf also cant have 18 con, so all in all.. Every class / Race is equal........

Had you taken the archer kit, it might be a little more of an issue, but still not much

LOL!

Well you can always use SK to change your appearance and still keep your bonuses. But when using it, don't get carried away. There's no fun in cheating! Some might not agree with me in this though :D

'Editing' or 'cheating' is only fun when it doesn't give me an unfair advantage i.e. changing my avatar or replacing an innate ability with one of relatively equal power, but more use for my playing style.

if you want more damage for any weapon then be a swashbuckler (thief) they get +1 to hit and damage every 5 levels as well as +1 ac (-1 actually) every 5 levels. so you can get a much higher bonus with a swashbuckler then with a elf ranger.
Remember, being Evil in Baldur's Gate 2 is VERY fun...

Then why not a Kensai? Who gets +1 to hit and dmg every THREE lvls, not to mention aditional hit/dmg bonus from grand mastery...

Rangers get to use priestspells, so I guess high wisdom wouldn't hurt. Then again, low wisdom never seems to hurt Minsc. ;)
