In my run-through, my party had a fighter and a druid/fighter on point. Both by that chapter had taken the advanced specialization in maces, giving them two out of three feats in the weapon. Each was wielding a +1 mace (with some extra side-damage) when they wailed into the iron golems. One had a 20 STR, the other, 18.
And they got wailed on, in turn. "Your bludgeoning weapon does no damage to the Iron Golem" was the message I received over and over, or something very like it. I reloaded, tried some potions and buffed up with protective party spells. No difference.
There's another thread which ironically I started, The Joys of Golems, where Cdjevito claims that the weapon enchantment required to defeat IGs is much higher. That makes sense to me. Are you sure it was your +1 weapons that were administrering blunt trauma to the brutes? If you've not turned on the option to pause when a weapon is ineffective, it might easily scroll by.

Hell, you're right. That's embarassing, especially when you urge other people to read questions carefully. Best that I follow my own advice, especially when I'm without caffeine.
Ice Golems were easy to kill. If you find 'em, I recommend using the early chapter +1 bludgeoning weapons that administer extra fire damage. Even in the later chapters they still serve well for run-of-the-mill attacks. I believe they're also susceptible to Melf's Minute Meteors, a spell that no longer has quite the appeal as in BG2 (IWD2's spellcasters quickly adapt to it, and cast protections against it), but remains worthwhile against cold melee types.
