"XYX" stated re: dual-class...

Post by Mosel8 »

Recently, user "XYX" posted a reply to a querry of mine: "Ethos-related restrictions stack on top of other restrictions and stay with you even when you multi- or dual class.
Mages cannot use shortbows because they lack training. When multi-d or dualled they learn how, so they can use them.

Clerics, Druids, Kensai, Cavaliers and Beastmasters cannot use certain stuff due to their convictions. These convictions do not leave them when they dual or multi, so the restrictions stay as well.

Use Any Item is the only thing (that I know of) that overcomes all restrictions, with the exception of ability score requirements (which cannot be overcome)."

I'm grateful for XYX's answer but I find myself with further questions... if what XYX says is true, then how come I've read over and over about how Kensai have dualed to mages and are equiping killer sword/katana combos?

Since mages are restricted from using swords, and a dualed kensai/mage has the restrictions of both classes, how can all the previous posts I've read about kensai/mages using swords be accurate?

Thanks

U are getting multi and dual class mixed up. When u multi-class u learn both classes and therefore use both restrictions. however in dual-class, u give up 1 class and advance as another. So when a mage starts to train as a fighter he can use swords, etc. when a dual-classed character reaches a hgiher lvl with his nw class that his old class, he can use both abilities, so a kensai/mage can use swords and cast spells.

Yes, you just have to get your mage lvl up above that of your fighter before the fighter's skills can be used. The reason that characters are able to use some of their former abilities but not all is for balance issues I imagine. It's to stop things like a cleric from wielding a 2handed sword simply because they dualed from a fighter.

I think you pretty much answered your own question: Kensais know how to use swords. They don't know how to use magic...When they dual over to mage, they learn how to use magic, so they can start using it. They still know how to use swords, so they can keep on doing that (once they progress to one level past their kensai level in their mage class - this is explained by saying that they need to focus completely on the new class to learn it for awhile). The ethos restriction of the Kensai is that they won't wear armor or use missile weapons, this ethos restriction still applies after dualling.

Admittedly, the whole dual classing system, and also the weapons restrictions, are a little odd. It is all a holdover from 2nd edition D&D rules and has been largely dropped in the 3rd edition rules which the upcoming Neverwinter Nights will be based on, so my clerics will be able to use 2 handed swords and long bows finally!!!!!
May you walk on warrrrm sannd....
